Today is National Weatherization Day. Here's a pic of Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen signing the proclamation recognizing it statewide.
Weatherization puts money and improvement into housing in our area that needs it most. Weatherized homes are significantly less costly to heat and cool, and residents even have better health outcomes as a result.
We support a wide-range of households from homeowners to renters, and individuals to families, who have a high energy burden and who are under 200% of the poverty level. The housing units we weatherize range from multi-family and framed houses, to mobile homes.

Our center in Geneva is low on items in the food pantry. If you are interested in arranging a donation or want to learn more, give us a call at 4027593564. Or you can visit us at 130 S 8th Street. Center hours are Monday-Thursday, 9-4 pm. In the mornings it is easier to come to the back door to drop off donations.

BVCA PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Blue Valley Community Action (BVCA) Partnership is now accepting applications for their 2026 2027 scholarship opportunities. All scholarships will be in the amount of $1,000 and can be used for tuition, books and fees associated with enrollment. Three scholarships will be awarded.

BVCA Partnership will offer the following scholarships this year: 1) the “BVCA Partnership Scholarship” will be awarded to an individual planning to attend or currently attending a 4-year college; 2) the “BVCA Partnership Vocational Scholarship” will be awarded to an individual planning to attend or currently attending a 2-year or less program at a vocational college; and 3) the “BVCA Partnership Southeast Community College Scholarship” will be awarded to an individual planning to attend or currently attending Southeast Community College.

Applicants must reside in BVCA Partnership’s service area, which includes Butler, Fillmore, Gage, Jefferson, Polk, Saline, Seward, Thayer and York Counties in Nebraska. Scholarship applications, guidelines and a listing of eligibility requirements may be obtained from area high school administrative or guidance counselor offices, or by contacting the BVCA Partnership Center in your area. Applications can also be downloaded from our website: www.bvca.net. For more information, contact Heather Lytle, BVCA’s Administrative Director, at (402) 729-2278 ext. 122. All applications must be received or postmarked on or before March 1, 2027.

Friends in Fillmore County, our food pantry is running low. Rick has helped people at our Family and Community Services Center in Geneva for almost 25 years. Here he gives an update on the pantry.

Last year in Fillmore County we distributed over 800 boxes from the pantry. That is only possible thanks to the support of our partners and people in the community. Thank you.

We want to say a big THANK YOU to Cory and Denise Prellwitz and Carson Rowh, the owners of Ashley Furniture Beatrice.
Back in September, Celena with our Gage County Family and Community Services Center discovered one of her freezers malfunctioning. Cindy with Beatrice Head Start put out some calls for help.
As Celena said, "Shortly after that, I got a message from Denise saying, 'We have a freezer for you to come pick up.'"
Talk about teamwork and a supportive community, wow!
