Come sit with a piece of Michigan q***r history. 💜

Next week, Affirmations is hosting a free Ferndale Pride documentary screening of America You Kill Me, a film about Jeffrey Montgomery, the Michigan gay rights activist whose work still echoes through our community today.

Jeffrey’s activism began after the 1984 murder of his partner, Michael, and grew into decades of anti-violence advocacy, community organizing, and persistent work to make LGBTQ+ people safer in Michigan.

After the screening, stay for a talkback with Affirmations Executive Director Tracy Hall.

This is local history. Our history. And it’s one of those evenings that feels important to be in the room for.

Q***r Yoga is back Saturday from 12–2 PM at Affirmations.

Beginner-friendly, all bodies welcome, no experience needed. Bring your own mat, bring a friend, or just bring yourself and see how the day feels.

Free to attend, donations welcome.

Your May to-do list. 💜

Okay, yes, technically we already spent the first half of the month putting on a giant q***r prom weekend. But there is still plenty going on around here!

Q***r Yoga twice this month. A conversation centering Black q***r and trans people, q***r and trans people of color, disabled and chronically ill folks, and others who have felt pushed to the edges of our community. A documentary screening about Michigan q***r activism and the legacy of Jeffrey Montgomery. Pizza at Como’s. And some exciting things brewing for Ferndale Pride. 👀

There’s room this month for movement, honest conversations, local history, free pizza, and whatever Pride plans are currently forming in your group chat.

Show up for whatever feels good to you. That’s kind of the whole point!

Come stretch, breathe, and spend an hour with other q***r folks doing something that does not require being good at email, answering questions, or having a five-year plan.

This class is q***r-centered, beginner-welcoming, and led by Sam Sills.

Come Home is an invitation back into the center.

On May 15, Affirmations is holding space for a community conversation about what it means to feel safe, seen, and able to belong here — especially for Black q***r and trans people, q***r and trans people of color, s*x workers, disabled and chronically ill community members, and others who have felt pushed to the edges or isolated from the center over time.

This is a space to speak honestly, listen deeply, and imagine what it would take for Affirmations to become a safer and more accountable home for the communities we serve.

We’ll begin the evening with a short tour of the center, so we ask folks to arrive early or right at 7pm if possible. Licensed therapists and emotional support folks will be present throughout the evening.

Food and childcare will be provided.

You don’t have to have the perfect words. Bring your questions, your hopes, your concerns, or just yourself.

Affirmations is looking for childcare providers. 💜

As we continue building out family-affirming programming, we want to connect with nannies, babysitters, daycare teachers, and childcare workers who are dedicated to creating affirming spaces for kids.

This would be for paid opportunities at upcoming programs and events — starting with Come Home, our May 15 community conversation centering Black/PoC/SWer/Trans/Disabled & Chronically Ill voices.

Because making space for honest community conversation also means making it possible for parents and caregivers to show up.

Youth Prom is next week. Like, NEXT WEEK next week. 💫

Which means this is officially the moment to stop saying “maybe” — and start figuring out who’s going, what everyone’s wearing, and whose phone is taking your pre-prom photos.

(And as a reminder: going by yourself and looking incredible while doing it is also absolutely a valid option!)

On May 8, Affirmations is turning the whole center over to q***r and trans teens for a night of music, dancing, performances, prom photos, sky deck air, and a chill space when the dance floor gets a little too much.

It’s low-pressure. It’s joyful. It’s very gay.
A prom you can actually enjoy. And it’s happening soon.
