UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE COVERAGE

Certain political candidates propose a state-level universal healthcare program that would provide healthcare to all citizens without any cost. These are political promises made in an attempt to secure votes for the upcoming November 3rd election. The following data presents research I conducted to determine the actual cost of implementing a universal healthcare program.
MaineCare offers comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage with no deductible or copay, except for a small group with low copays ($0.50-$3.00 per service).
In contrast, private health insurance plans with a $0 deductible typically cost $1,094 monthly. Vision and dental coverage would add an additional $80 per month. However, unlike MaineCare, standard private major medical health insurance plans in Maine do not provide a $0 deductible and $0 copay plan for comprehensive medical services, including dental and vision coverage.
A state-level universal health care program similar to MaineCare is projected to cost between $17.8 billion and $19.3 billion annually. Health care costs constitute 25% to 27% of Maine’s economy, ranking it among the highest per capita rates in the US.
This implies that the cost per individual in Maine is $13,785 annually.
However, since 400,000 people receive “free” care through MaineCare, the real cost to the 1 million who pay for this service is $19,300 per person.
For a family of 2, this equates to $38,000 annually, while for a family of four, it amounts to $77,200 annually. Consequently, taxes in Maine would need to increase by this amount to fund this health care program.
I am opposed to this terrible, socialistic policy. It is not a viable, affordable solution for the health care problems in Maine.
