We have enjoyed sharing our preparedness messages during this first week of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. We hope you have found the information useful, and you will take the steps necessary to be for the 2026 Season. Here is a link to additional information from FEMAโ€™s Ready.Gov website: https://www.ready.gov/sites/default/files/2024-03/ready.gov_hurricane_hazard-info-sheet.pdf. There is a tremendous amount of information on this site that can help you be ready when disaster strikes. To round out the week, we want to remind everyone to BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR. During natural disasters, the neighborhood is often the first line of support and help. Be sure to check on the elderly and those with medical needs. Are you wondering how to get started? Simply walk out your front door, look to your left, look to your right, look to across the street, and to the left and right of the neighbor across the street. You have now come up with 5 neighbors to check in with. Finally, during any cookouts, block parties, or gatherings this summer, be sure to ask your friends, families and neighbors if they are .

Wind can cause significant damage and create hazards as a result of overhead utility lines being pulled down from snapped poles and fallen trees. There are 5 categories of Hurricanes, and these are based on the sustained winds associated with the storms. Category 1 Hurricanes have sustained winds of 74-95mph and can result in some damage, while Category 5 Hurricanes have sustained winds in excess of 157mph and can result in catastrophic damage. The rating system is known as the Saffir-Simpson Scale, and additional information can be found here: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php. Prolonged Power Outages in excess of 3-5 days should be expected from even a Category 1 Hurricane. If you encounter downed power lines, never approach them and contact your electric company (in the City, that is Dominion Energy). Be patient, as these crews canโ€™t work if the winds exceed the safety ratings of their bucket trucks. Here is a link to Dominionโ€™s Electric Safety Page with steps you can take to be prepared: https://www.dominionenergy.com/about/our-stories/storm-preparation-and-safety

Impacts from tropical systems arenโ€™t limited to the coastal regions. Due to the behavior of the tropical system and the lay of the land, Virginia has seen its share of significant flooding as the systems move farther inland. The most recent significant impact was from Hurricane Helene that impacted Southwest Virginia in 2024. Do not be lulled into thinking that you will not be impacted by Tropical Systems just because you are further inland. All of Virginia is subject to impacts from Tropical Systems, so being prepared and having a plan is crucial. Here is a link to the Virginia Department of Emergency Managementโ€™s Hurricane Preparedness- Inland Impacts Guide: https://www.vaemergency.gov/aem/assets/hurricane-inland-guide.pdf. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management also put together a documentary titled, โ€œEchoes of Heleneโ€. If you would like to see firsthand accounts of the Inland Impacts from a Hurricane, take the 40 minutes to watch the video: https://vimeo.com/1125858631
