In 1976 Steve Buscemi took the FDNY civil service test when he was just 18 years old. In 1980 Steve Buscemi became a New York City Firefighter.

For four years, Buscemi served on one of FDNY's busiest, Engine Co. 55 in Manhattan's Little Italy. He later left the fire service to become a successful actor, writer and director.

After 9/11/2001... Brother Buscemi returned to FDNY Engine 55.

On September 12, 2001 and for several days following Steve worked 12-hour shifts alongside other firefighters digging and sifting through the rubble from the World Trade Center looking for survivors.

Very few photographs and no interviews exist because he declined them. He wasn't there for the publicity.

In 2003 he also gave a speech at a union rally supporting higher wages for firefighters and to stop fire houses from closing. He got arrested along with other firefighters.

Also not very well known is that in 2012 Buscemi showed up in Breezy Point, NY and quietly assisted in the clean-up efforts of the damage and mass destruction left by Super Storm Sandy.

Once a firefighter, always a firefighter!

FDNY Ladder Company 3 received some of the heaviest casualties of any fire company, losing most of its men in the September 11 attacks.

The company reported to the north tower of the World Trade Center, where Captain Patrick "Paddy" Brown and his men were last known to be on the 35th floor of the tower. The company arrived at the WTC running “heavy”, meaning that they carried more men than would actually be on a shift, as the attacks came during a shift change, and both shifts remained on duty.

We remember the crew of Ladder 3 - Captain Patrick (Paddy) J. Brown, Lt. Kevin W. Donnelly, Michael Carroll, James Raymond Coyle, Gerard Dewan, Jeffrey John Giordano, Joseph Maloney, John Kevin McAvoy, Timothy Patrick McSweeney, Joseph J. Ogren, Steven John Olson, along with the rest of the FDNY casualties.

This is the badge that NYPD Officer Moira Smith was wearing on September 11, 2001 while attempting to rescue the victims trapped in the World Trade Center. Officer Smith was the first officer to report the terrorist attack when she witnessed the first plane strike the first tower.

She was assigned to the 13th Precinct.

Officer Smith had been employed with the New York City Police Department for 13 years, and is survived by her husband, also a New York City Police Officer, and her then two-year-old daughter.

This is a day none of us will ever forget!

Always remember... On this day... 20 years ago 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning tomorrow.

343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift of saving lives.

None of them saw past 10:00am Sept 11, 2001. In one single moment life may never be the same.

As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today and tonight before you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted.

It is all too easy to take for granted the "little things" but these are the "things" that truly matter. Breathe today and slow down... appreciate the people and aspects of life that you rush by ever too often. Hold a door, give a compliment, do something for someone... no matter how small it may be... do the good. It DOES matter.

Active shooter response training has new meaning, uses lessons learned after Oneida Casino Complex shooting

Doesn’t matter the type of uniform, patch or vehicle they drive - public safety is team driven! It only makes sense to train as a team and nice to see that routinely in effect throughout our district.

We are proud to play a small part in this training with loaning some equipment to add for some realism.

Police, EMS and dispatchers conduct joint training to respond to an active shooter. They're using lessons learned from their response to the shooting at the Oneida Casino Complex in May to know where to focus their attention now.

09/06/2021

As we celebrate the last official weekend of summer, we are excited for all of the Fall 2021 NWTC Fire Training classes.

We need six more registrations for the NFA Fire Investigation class. This is a FREE course!! We will need to have these by the end of the week or the class will be canceled.

The new Flashover Trailer (2nd edition) is scheduled to be here in October 2021. There will also be a Mobile Burn Tower that is scheduled to arrive by the end of the year.

We have Fire Officer 1 virtual and Emergency Services Instructor 1 blended/virtual classes running this fall. Both of these classes are nearing maximum capacity. The pandemic has taught us to use technology and make attending these courses possible for people that were unable to travel or attend in-person classes.

We also have Firefighter and Entry Level Driver Operator classes running throughout our district. If you or your department are in need of a class please be sure to reach out and we will get it set up.

We also are partnering with the Brew City FOOLS for some H.O.T. training in December.

Lastly, if you’re having a fire department open house or fundraiser and would like NWTC Fire Training to be present, please be sure to contact us.

Our stay-cation trip this weekend takes us to Oconto County. The City of Oconto has some awesome historic buildings such as the Farnsworth Library (built 1903) and Oconto Courthouse (built 1891).

Also in the area is Copper Culture State Park which is home to a prehistoric cemetery dating back to 4000 BC to 2000 BC!

The prevalence of illegal and legal drugs of abuse has led to other crimes such as OWI; burglaries and thefts; and crimes of violence not to mention hospitalizations and deaths from overdoses.

These trends are discussed in our LEAD program and Academy as well as through several specialized training opportunities for current officers and deputies.

The use of Naloxone has been a game changer in the response to an overdose and our EMS students are introduced to that in their studies.

Ideally preventing the abuse of these is the goal and we have prevention programs for educators to help raise the awareness in their communities.

Our stay-cation took us to the Shawano area this week. Twig's Beverage is the home to the Sun Drop museum which is well worth the trip to Shawano - plus you can get factory fresh Sun Drop which we brought back to campus!

Shawano also has a great classic downtown with some awesome buildings! And if the weather is a little hot - a little dip in clear and cool Shawano Lake will do the trick!

The way we have always done it isn't working anymore - this class provides new strategies designed to improve both the quality and quantity of applicants as well as ways to retain them.

This is either some ‘behind the scenes’ info or a little ‘too much information’……..

A ballistic vest is something that is worn everyday by our law enforcement officers. As you can imagine - especially on days like this - they can get a little hot. Taking care of the vest tends to be a very important part of the job!
