Thanks to some partnerships with The Home Depot and Stanley we have been providing the FATMAX tool to our Breaching course and Basic SWAT school for the last 5 years.

This little innovative tool packs a big wallop! Nice to see it gaining momentum in the law enforcement world!

This is the FUBAR tool also known as the Stanely FATMAX, you can pick it up from your local big box home improvement store. You can keep this tool in your vehicle; personal or work. A great tool that is easily acquired and has real-world use. Here is the YouTube link to see how it's modified for use! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-LE0kwJ2oY

Knowing the basics of CPR could help save a life when time is of the essence

With a potential tragedy averted during the Bengals/Bills football game last week, CPR has been the talk for the last week.

One of our EMS instructors sat down with WBAY TV-2 to discuss the training. It’s pretty simple training that is clearly a lifesaver!

If someone collapses, the most important thing to do is call 911 and start chest compressions. This will help push the oxygenated blood already in the body to important organs, like the brain, heart and lungs.

OFFICER DORE TO THE RESCUE

On Thursday, January 5, 2023, residents and visitors took over Downtown Denver to take in the National Western Stock Show Kick-Off Parade. As with all large events, Denver Police officers were on hand to make sure everyone had a fun, safe time. One of those officers was Officer Brad Dore, who is currently assigned to our Traffic Operations Unit. While monitoring his post at 18th and Stout Streets, a man came running up to him and his partner and explained that there was a baby who was not breathing two blocks away. Officer Dore sprang into action, immediately calling for emergency medical services and running to 17th and Stout Streets with the man, where a crowd was standing around the baby as a woman was holding it. The child's mother was nearby, visibly concerned for the well-being of her child. Officer Dore noticed that the baby was not moving but was conscious. He took the baby from the woman and immediately began administering first aid. He first turned the child over and began patting their back, then cleared their airway, and patted their back again until the baby began to cry. Officer Dore held onto the baby so that mom could gather herself, and while doing so, took his hat off and placed it on baby to help keep them warm. When Denver Fire and EMS arrived on scene just minutes later, baby was calm and breathing. Officer Dore then handed baby over to EMS and returned to his post.

ASU Center for Problem-Oriented Policing

The duties of law enforcement officers tend to focus on solving problems. Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) is a strategy that originated here in Wisconsin from UW Professor Herman Goldstein.

Professor Goldstein theorized that a problem-oriented approach can eliminate the problem, reduce the problem, reduce the harms created by the problem, manage the problem better, or remove the problem from police consideration.

We cover POP here in our program and academy and also have a day long specialized course. For more info on POP check out the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing.

https://popcenter.asu.edu

The mission of the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing is to advance the concept and practice of problem-oriented policing in open and democratic societies. It does so by making readily accessible information about ways in which police can effectively and equitably address specific crime and disord...

New Employee Recognition:

Hello Door County! I’m Mindy Rose and am a casual call paramedic with DCEMS. I was born and raised in Green Bay, moved away (Marquette, Milwaukee & Chicago) for college and “real” jobs, but eventually realized that NE Wisconsin is where I wanted to be. I currently live in Ashwaubenon with my family and have been a full-time paramedic instructor with NWTC for the past 9+ years. I really love helping students learn and watching them become confident in their EMS skills and knowledge. My EMS career started when I was 13 and joined my local Explorer post (now called Cadets). I fell in love with EMS and took an EMT-B class when I was in high school, became licensed when I was 18 in 2001, and I’ve worked in public safety and EMS ever since. I have my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice but found that I really do love EMS and serving communities in the emergency medical capacity. I’ve worked as an EMT & paramedic in Ashwaubenon, Milwaukee, New London, Plymouth and more locations. I’ve also spent many years working in emergency departments in Green Bay. In my free time I love to spend time at my cabin in the U.P., traveling, camping, Jeeping, and just being outdoors. I look forward to serving the residents and visitors of Door County.

Continued progress with the Oconto Unified School DistrictHigh School students and Lena High School student as they work towards their WI State Firefighting Certification. These students this past Saturday successfully completed their 60 hours of Entry Level Firefighter training at NWTC Public Safety Education. These students have now moved onto the 36 hour Firefighter Level 1 course. Today we got to continue practicing our skills in ground ladder evolutions and their techniques for search and rescue. Their efficiencies continue to improve each day, as they move towards their final written and practical test date in December.
Last night 4 of our firefighters and one of our Lieutenants went to White Lake Volunteer Fire Department to participate in a live fire flashover training held in conjunction with NWTC Public Safety Education.

Flashovers are a dangerous event within a fire where materials and products of combustion which are not directly exposed to flame begin to spontaneously ignite due to the high temperatures in an enclosed space creating a further rapid increase in temperatures and a life threatening even for anyone in the enclosed space.

No group picture has arisen yet of our crew but here’s a couple pictures of the simulator in action from the outside. We’ll post a couple videos in the next few days.
