August Snack Attack is Back! Kids are learning to make healthy and delicious treats like Berry Smoothies at the picnic table outside the library. Next week we'll feature homemade salsa and guacamole on Monday, Amazing Thai Peanut Dipping Sauce on Wednesday, and then on Friday we'll have a fun field trip to the museum to try apples from a tree that is over 100 years old!

We're starting Year #3 of Group Piano Lessons for 2nd Graders up through High Schoolers at the Library! There are six groups, and space is limited, so sign up at the library if you'd like your child to have a weekly 30-minute group piano lesson with children's librarian, Holly Davis. The three groups on Tuesday are Beginning Homeschool Piano at 2:30 PM, Fifth & Sixth Graders at 3:30 PM, and Middle Schoolers & High Schoolers at 4 PM. The three groups on Thursday are Intermediate Level Homeschool Piano at 2:30 PM, Second Graders at 3:30 PM, and Third & Fourth Graders at 4 PM. Thanks to the Friends of the Haines Borough Public Library and a federal grant for getting these wonderful piano keyboards for the young people. Thanks also to those who donated piano keyboards the kids can take home to practice on at their houses. It's going to be a wonderful, musical year! Classes start this Thursday, August 20 and this coming Tuesday, August 25. Here are some fun photos from last year:

The Summer Reading Program Finale had 78 children and 33 adults come to the library on Wednesday, July 29 at 11 A.M. to celebrate all the reading this summer. You might have seen the bubbles and sidewalk chalk outside the library, or you might have smelled the hot dogs on the BBQ. Over the nine and a half weeks of the reading program, there were 8,524 books and chapters read by the children. Thanks to the Friends of the Haines Borough Public Library for supporting our Summer Reading Program!

The Mt. Riley hike was amazing yesterday. 25 people, 5 dogs, and plenty of beautiful sunshine. Some things it is much better to learn about by reading about them. But a few things, like hiking Mt. Riley, are learned about much better by experiencing them. Thanks to all the brave hikers who came out and made plenty of noise so we did not see a single bear. One more big hike coming this summer next Thursday: Seven-Mile Saddle!

Wednesday, July 29 at 11 A.M. the Summer Reading Program Finale will be celebrated at Tlingit Playground with stories, songs, books, and treasures for the kids. Thanks to the Friends of the Haines Borough Public Library, we'll have hot dogs for everyone! Thanks to Matt Davis and Nate Miller for grilling. Our last Gardeners' Club for the Summer Reading Program will be Monday, July 27 at 3 P.M. at the strawberry patch behind the library. We appreciate the Friends of the Haines Borough Public Library for providing us with the garden tools we used for weeding all summer. This happy and sunny picture is from a few years ago. We hope for more sunshine to be coming to Haines soon!
