It is with heavy hearts that the Hewitt Police Department announces the passing of K9 Kurek.
Born on February 5, 2018, Kurek joined the Hewitt Police Department in February 2020 and faithfully served alongside his handler, Officer Zahirniak. Throughout his career, Kurek demonstrated unwavering loyalty, courage, and dedication to protecting our community. His work resulted in more than 250 arrests, leaving a lasting impact on the department and the citizens he served.
Kurek was more than a police dog—he was a beloved member of both his police family and his family at home. He formed strong bonds with those around him and brought joy to everyone who knew him. When he was off duty, one of his favorite activities was popping balloons, and he did it like a champion.
To Officer Zahirniak, Kurek was more than a partner. He was a best friend, trusted companion, and family member. His loss is deeply felt, and he will be missed more than words can express.
Please keep Officer Zahirniak, our department, and all who knew and loved Kurek in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
