Last night, just before midnight, firefighters from Homer Volunteer Fire Department, Kachemak Emergency Service Area, and Western Emergency Services responded to a mutual aid structure fire.
Through the combined efforts of all three departments, the fire was brought under control quickly. While we were able to save the home, our hearts are with the family as they mourn the loss of six birds and one beloved dog.
There were also some bright moments amidst the tragedy. Crews successfully rescued one cat, two dogs, and four birds. The cat and the birds were transported to the veterinary clinic for further care. One determined little bird reminded us all just how strong the will to survive can be, giving Homer Firefighter Martin and Kachemak Chief Parker a memorable bite during the rescue.
Incidents like these are a reminder that every life matters, and our firefighters will do everything they can to save both people and animals.
