Today, the Middle Township Police Department proudly celebrates the retirement of Lieutenant Jason Sweitzer after nearly three decades of dedicated service to law enforcement and more than 25 years of service to the Middle Township community.

Jason began his law enforcement career in 1998 as a SLEO I with the Stone Harbor Police Department, in 1999 he joined the North Wildwood Police Department as a SLEO II and in August of 2001, he joined the Middle Township Police Department. From that day forward, he dedicated himself to this department, the people he served, and the brothers and sisters he worked alongside.

Over the course of his career, Jason served in the Patrol Division, Special Services Unit, the Major Crimes Unit, Street Crimes Unit, Bicycle Patrol, and Honor Guard. He served as a Physical Fitness Instructor and Military Drill Instructor at the Cape May County Police Academy, helping shape and prepare the next generation of law enforcement officers. Through every assignment and every promotion, he continued to bring the same qualities that defined his career: dedication, professionalism, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to his fellow officers and the community.

But a career cannot truly be measured by titles, assignments, or years of service.

It is measured by the people whose lives you touched.

For the members of the Middle Township Police Department, Jason will be remembered as much for the person he was as for the officer he became. He was a respected leader, a trusted mentor, a dependable partner, and, most importantly, a friend. He was someone you could count on when things got difficult, someone willing to share his knowledge and experience, and someone who could always bring a little humor to even the longest shift.

For those fortunate enough to have worked alongside him, there are countless stories, memories, laughs, and moments that will be carried forward. And now, as he rides off into the sunset on horseback, we wish him nothing but happiness, adventure, and all the best in this next chapter.

Jason, on behalf of the entire Middle Township Police Department — past and present — thank you.

Thank you for the countless hours away from your family. Thank you for the sacrifices that often went unseen. Thank you for answering the call, for standing beside your fellow officers, for mentoring those who followed, and for giving so much of yourself to this profession.

You have left an indelible mark on this department, and your absence will be felt around the halls, in the squad room, and on the streets you spent so many years serving.

While we are proud to celebrate everything you have accomplished, there is certainly a bittersweet feeling as we say goodbye to one of our own.

Lieutenant Sweitzer, you didn't just serve with the Middle Township Police Department — you became a part of its history and its family.

From all of us at MTPD, thank you for your service, your friendship, your leadership, and the memories.

We wish you and your family nothing but happiness, good health, and well-deserved time together in the years ahead.

Congratulations, Jason.

You served with honor. You led with integrity. You made a difference.

Now it's time to enjoy the next chapter.

Enforcement Initiative on August 15, Remembering Patti Smith Barrett
High-Visibility Traffic Enforcement Operations Focused on Pedestrian Safety Will Happen this
Saturday
TRENTON – August 12, 2026 – The New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP)
today announced a Goal Zero mid-summer saturation enforcement initiative scheduled for Saturday,
August 15, 2026, dedicated to the memory of Chatham resident Patti Smith Barrett.
The all-day and evening initiative will bring together law enforcement agencies for coordinated high visibility
traffic enforcement focused on pedestrian safety during peak summer weekend community
activity. Saturdays are statistically among the deadliest days for pedestrian crashes, and this deployment
targets high-volume summer traffic while highlighting the dangers of distracted, inattentive, aggressive,
and unsafe driving—including excessive window tinting.
On January 2, 2026, shortly after noon, 54-year-old Chatham resident Patti Smith Barrett was walking
along Fairmount Avenue in Chatham Borough—an area without sidewalks—when she was struck by a
Ford F-150. She sustained critical injuries and died five days later, on January 7, 2026, at Morristown
Medical Center.
The driver, Matthew Vining of Chatham Township, later pleaded guilty to third-degree vehicular
homicide and failure to maintain a lane. He was sentenced to 364 days in county jail, three years of
probation, 80 hours of community service, and a six-month driver’s license suspension. Window tinting
on the windshield and both the front and rear passenger-side windows was identified as a contributing
factor.
Patti was a married mother of four, a former broadcast journalist, and an active community volunteer
deeply devoted to her family and the Chatham community. Following her death, she donated organs that
provided life-saving assistance to two people.
“Patti Smith Barrett’s death is a tragic reminder of why Goal Zero matters. When a preventable crash
takes a mother, a neighbor, and a valued member of the community, the loss is felt far beyond one town.
This mid-summer saturation detail honors her memory by putting officers on the road to protect
pedestrians and hold drivers accountable for unsafe behavior,” said Collingswood Police Chief Kevin J.
Carey, NJSACOP president.
“Goal: Zero is ultimately about preventing another family and another community from experiencing a
loss like this. Patti's death affected all of Chatham. By dedicating this detail to her memory, we hope
motorists will understand that distracted, inattentive, aggressive, and unsafe driving are not abstract
traffic violations—they can have irreversible consequences” said Chatham Borough Police Chief Brian
K. Gibbons.
The initiative is part of the broader Goal Zero movement, which seeks to eliminate traffic fatalities and
serious injuries through coordinated enforcement and education. Agencies participating in the August 15
detail will conduct high-visibility enforcement operations throughout the day and evening, with officers
focusing on violations that endanger pedestrians and other roadway users.
NJSACOP urges all motorists to remain alert, avoid distractions, reduce speed, yield to pedestrians, and
ensure their vehicles comply with New Jersey’s window-tint regulations. Drivers who fail to do so put
pedestrians, families, and entire communities at unnecessary risk.
“On August 15, law enforcement will be visible and focused on the behaviors that put lives at risk. Goal
Zero is not just a slogan—it is a commitment to making sure no other family suffers a loss like the one
the Barrett family and the Chatham community have endured,” Chief Carey said.

🚔 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over — Summer 2026 🚔

The Middle Township Police Department is committed to combating impaired driving 365 days a year. Keeping impaired drivers off our roadways is a full-time priority for our agency, and our officers remain vigilant in identifying and addressing impaired driving whenever it occurs.

From August 19, 2026, through September 7, 2026, our agency will place special emphasis on impaired driving enforcement as part of the statewide New Jersey “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

During this mobilization, we will join law enforcement agencies throughout New Jersey in increased enforcement and public awareness efforts, in collaboration with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

🚗 Designate a sober driver.
📱 Use a rideshare service or arrange for a safe ride home.
⚠️ Never get behind the wheel while impaired.

Impaired driving is preventable, and one impaired driver can put countless lives at risk.

This campaign may have a designated time frame, but our commitment to keeping impaired drivers off the road is year-round.
