"Woman" is the word of the year! This is fascinating - and a really thoughtful article. "Woman" means so much and is clearly a word of strength. Check out the article: https://www.dictionary.com/e/word-of-the-year/

Our staff is having some fun this month with different themes on different days. Last week included...wait for it...Ugly Sweater Day!
Maggie spent 20 years in and out of jail, in and out of sobriety. She lost custody of all 3 of her children. She tried 30 & 90-day programs, “but they never felt life-changing,” she says. “Taking the chance and allowing myself that full year at The Women’s Home – that finally allowed me to make a holistic life change. In the beginning, there were so many things that I didn’t know I didn’t know. Being surrounded by counselors that knew me, utilizing all the different aspects of the WholeLife® Program, I learned how to ground myself. I wasn’t just living day to day anymore.”
When it came time to start thinking about a career, Maggie challenged our counselor. She knew she was meant for something big. Today she is a Policy Analyst and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Texas Center for Justice and Equity. She lobbies before the Texas Legislature regularly, including for the Family Reunification Act which is also helping her get reunited with her own children (that's her daughter in the picture with Maggie). “I didn’t give up. Today, I don’t feel like there’s anything that could happen that send me back to the life I knew before.”
If you'd like to help us provide the support women like Maggie deserve in order to reclaim their lives, please click here:

Our own Joann Dunmire, Visual Merchandiser at our The Cottage Shop, shared this lovely reflection, and we wanted to share it with you:
The Cottage Reflections:
In the past few weeks, many TWH Cottage Shop customers have returned after a long break.
Just as our TWH clients come for recovery and a new life, our donations are looking for a new home and an extended life.
Our clients develop job skills, learn life skills, team work and find sobriety.
Our Cottage Shop donations of clothing and goods generate funds for our programs.
Both emerge repackaged, joyful and revived.
Our communities are a better place with the TWH clinical care, fundraising, outreach and a shopping experience to share our mission to builds communities that strengthen women and support families as they reclaim their stability.
Thank you very much to The Brown Foundation, Inc. for their generous and ongoing support!
We have such an awesome staff! For some extra holiday fun, we're doing themed days in December. The 1st was Flannel Day, and our staff embraced it!
Many thanks to Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston for their support!
Today is Rosa Parks Day. Ms. Parks held true to her beliefs, including the belief that she was worthy - worthy and deserving of a seat on that bus - and worthy of respect. Today and always, we celebrate strong women who fight hard to claim the lives they deserve. Thank you, Ms. Parks, for showing us what it means to be true to yourself.
A really helpful piece about trauma and the holidays from SAMHSA
Year-round, we encourage providers to adopt a trauma-informed lens—to use knowledge of trauma and its impact to make decisions about all aspects of their relationships with clients and how they run their program.

Janel Chitty is doing an amazing thing! She is competing in IRONMAN Texas this weekend - for The Women's Home - and for herself: "I was blessed to have crossed paths with The Women's Home in a very vulnerable stage of my life. These women have deeply impacted my life for the better. Watching these women grow and prosper has been invigorating. This organization holds a very dear place in my heart, so I have teamed up with my employer Express Employment Professionals International Headquarters in order to give back and help women in need. As part of our Brand it Blue initiative, I will be competing in my first full Ironman challenge on October 9, 2021 in order to help raise money for The Women’s Home. This is a race of 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and a run of 26.2 miles. I have challenged myself to push my limits in a way that I never dreamed would be possible. This challenge represents the change possible with the support of The Women’s Home as well. Anyone that knows me knows why this organization is so precious to me. They gave me hope. Raising money for The Women’s Home will help push me to cross that finish line, not out of vanity but to help other women struggling, to lift them up and to offer them hope, just as it was offered to me. Please give what you can today." Thank you, Janel!! We are cheering you on!! To support Janel and TWH, click here: https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/Ironman20
