Effective 9 am, Christmas Eve --- the luminary bin is now cleaned and organized for the third time and stocked with the few remaining supplies. There are about 1000 candles left. The sand bin lid was askew and the sand was wet. There was plenty of sand in the bin but Charley David and I turned it on its side and added some more sand for easier access..

Please make doubly sure the lid is on the supply bin as there were many white bags/sandwich bags that were soaked and had to be thrown away.

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season.

Everywhere you look in the city of Shenandoah, you see signs of the holiday season. From wreaths, yard decorations and Santa and snowmen blowups to colored lights on the houses and yards, you see the holiday spirit. You see whimsical decorations like Snoopy on his doghouse; you see religious-themed managers; you see angels from the City angels to those in resident yards. You see beauty at every turn you make.

The Civic Club selects a December Yard of the Month as the last monthly selection of the year. But during December, the Committee also names two best holiday-decorated homes to honor as well. This is a hard decision, not made until close to Christmas, to allow all families the opportunity to put their design into place. It is not an easy decision as the community brings its "A-game" each year. The Committee spends hours driving the community looking at homes in the daylight as well as at night to make a selection of two.

This year's selection of two homes has been completed, our last honors for 2023.

The home of Michael and Claudia Caldwell, 104 S. Silverwood Ranch Dr., is a constant change of colors, effortlessly sliding from one to the next. The colors add a beautiful background to their simple message of "Joy" with a manger scene and beautiful angel. The owner told the committee that when looking for a lot on which to build over 12 years ago, they saw the angel banners and knew she wanted to live in Shenandoah.

The home of John Kirwan and Sharon Williams, 19 S. Crescendo Path, features beautiful lighting on their front yard trees against the background of their light-outlined home. The solid red lights are quite eye-catching The family previously lived in Shenandoah and moved away. It did not take long for them to return. a story we have heard many times when talking to residents.

The Civic Club meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Executive Conference Room at the municipal complex. Volunteers do not have to attend meetings to participate in event preparation or the event itself. Some activities require extensive pre-event preparation while others may require only a few hours. Most of the city's events are two hours in duration. We invite you to start the new year, our 50th anniversary as a city, by joining other volunteers in the community. May you and your family have a wonderful and safe holiday season!

Just a reminder that our City of Shenandoah food drive for the Montgomery County Food Bank ends at 5 p.m. tomorrow, December 15, at 5 p.m.

Join us as we gather food to benefit the Montgomery County Food Bank in the fight against hunger. The holidays can be a tough time for families and food should not be one of those issues. Donations will be accepted at the Municipal Complex during 8 a.m. -5 p.m business hours.

It's December in Shenandoah, but it is springtime in the Yard of the Month for December. Looking at this month's selection, no one would know that it is December with 40-degree temperatures!

The Civic Club's December Yard of the Month, 29117 Driftwood, is the home of Betty Torzewski. The Civic Club Committee said she was so excited to be selected as the month's choice. Looking at the yard, it is hard to believe this is a December yard and not one in early spring before we had the hot dry summer. There is no doubt that she enjoys working in her yard because it is meticulously manicured. Congratulations on a lovely yard to end the 2023 selections.

The Civic Club's Yard of the Month will take a break until March when it will resume. December will also see the selection of two homes for their holiday decorations. These will be named closer to Christmas to allow everyone time to get their decorations in place.

Each year on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Survivors, veterans, and visitors from all over the world come together to honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. A further 1,178 people were injured in the attack, which permanently sank two U.S. Navy battleships (the USS Arizona and the USS Utah) and destroyed 188 aircraft.

On Aug. 23, 1994, the United States Congress designated Dec. 7 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Every year, remembrance events are held at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, culminating in a commemoration ceremony on Dec. 7.
