IPS Names Kevin McMahan 2026 Principal of the Year
Kevin McMahan, who has led Jonathan Jennings School 109 for more than a decade, had been kept in the dark by “surprise” meetings with district representatives before he was brought to the gym under the impression that students had prepared a special presentation for him.
Seated at the front of the gym filled with students, a somewhat perplexed McMahan listened as two youngsters read a book they created, “If You Give a Principal a Jimmy John’s Sandwich," celebrating his leadership and impact on the school community.
As the students reached the final page, IPS Superintendent Dr. Aleesia Johnson stepped from her hiding spot in the gym to finish the last page, delivering the surprise announcement:
“And THAT is why you have been named Principal of the Year!”
McMahan’s family then emerged from the back of the gym to celebrate the special moment with him. His wife, son, daughter, mother and father joined students, staff and school leaders in celebrating the recognition.
“Kevin McMahan leads with heart, purpose and a genuine belief in what his students can achieve,” Dr. Johnson said. “It was wonderful to see his students, colleagues and family come together to celebrate him. Kevin is deeply deserving of this recognition, and I’m proud to name him our Principal of the Year.”
The IPS Principal of the Year Award recognizes principals who go beyond the day-to-day demands of their position to create an exceptional educational environment. By presenting this award, IPS hopes to encourage excellence in school leadership and contribute in a meaningful way to the improvement of education in the district.
A tearful McMahan admitted that it was a deeply emotional moment when students read his book in the gym as the entire school looked on.
“The biggest thing is just building relationships. When the students and the staff know you truly care, and you're on the ground and you're wearing whatever hat you need to wear, then they know that you're fully committed, and they will follow."
Kevin McMahan was the guest speaker at Assistance League's 40th Anniversary celebration of Operation School Bell®.
