White River Update

I know there have been questions following the recent news out of Carmel regarding a potential wastewater main break and its possible impact on the White River.

I’ve been in contact with Citizens Energy Group, and I want to reassure Indianapolis residents: this is not expected to impact Indianapolis or our drinking water supply.

Citizens Energy Group is coordinating closely with Carmel and assisting as needed. While there are still some uncertainties, any potential wastewater discharge would be minimal compared with the volume of water already flowing through the White River and would be expected to dilute quickly.

Citizens also noted that this would be similar to the temporary impacts we can see from a combined sewer overflow. Thanks to the DigIndy Tunnel System, those overflows are now largely eliminated, but they can still occur a few times a year. When they do, temporary swimming and fishing restrictions may be put in place in the affected area for approximately 24–48 hours.

Most importantly, there is no expected impact to Indianapolis’ drinking water.

I’ll continue to monitor the situation and share additional information as it becomes available.

The Modern Rockville project will move into Phase 3 of construction next week.

To accommodate the phase change, alternating single-lane closures are planned on U.S. 36 (Rockville Road) eastbound and westbound between Raceway Road and Girl School Road on or after Wednesday, August 26 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Phase 3 of construction will begin on or after Thursday, August 27 and is expected to be in place for three weeks. During Phase 3, a single left lane will be closed on U.S. 36 in each direction. Eastbound traffic will be on new pavement once Phase 3 begins.

Heads up!!

Bridgeport Rd is currently closed due to INDOTs Reviving Rd project. It will be opening and closing in the coming days.

Some day soon the stress will go away.

🚧 Fleming Gardens Drainage Improvements Update

After years of working to get this project included in the City's capital budget, I'm excited to see the Fleming Gardens Neighborhood Drainage Improvements moving forward.

This project will help address longstanding drainage issues through new storm sewers, culverts, hybrid and traditional ditches, and other infrastructure improvements.

An added benefit: once the drainage work is complete, all streets highlighted in both red and blue on the project map will be fully repaved, providing residents with improved roads in addition to better drainage.

A historic flood is forcing central Indiana residents to evacuate as the White River rises. Indianapolis is bracing for the river to crest at 20 feet by 8 a.m. Saturday, following excessive rainfall. Officials urged residents in flood-prone areas, including Broad Ripple, Ravenswood, and Rocky Ripple, to evacuate Friday afternoon.

🚨FLOOD UPDATE (8:45 A.M.):

Residents in ROCKY RIPPLE and RAVENSWOOD are strongly advised to evacuate.

The 53rd street gate in ROCKY RIPPLE is being closely monitored. Should a closure of this gate be required, vehicles—including emergency vehicles—will not be able to access the area. Any residents remaining in the impacted zone should evacuate as soon as possible.

Based on the latest data, DPW Stormwater Engineering expects the White River to crest between 2 and 8 p.m. with highs reaching Rocky Ripple and Ravenswood as late as 8 p.m. This information is subject to change given incoming weather impacts.

DPW is also monitoring Westfield Blvd and weighing a potential closure. 96th St. and Brandt Rd. has been closed due to flooding resulting in road failure. Residents are encouraged to avoid the area. This is not a complete list of impacted roadways. If a roadway is flooded, DO NOT attempt to traverse.

Emergency services are coordinating with AES to monitor potential outages—both planned and unplanned. Flood waters and the potential for high winds pose a significant safety risk due to threat of downed power lines.

Many of the trails on the city’s north side are currently impassable due to high water. Residents should avoid walking or biking on submerged trails and greenways or in areas where high water is present.

The current forecast suggests rain will begin falling Saturday morning and continue through Sunday. Impacts of this rainfall on current flooding are difficult to predict, and residents are encouraged to follow the City of Indianapolis, Indy DPW, and MESA on social media and to text INDYFLOOD26 to 67283 to receive text updates on flood response.

A Red Cross-staffed shelter is available at the Washington Township Adult Center at 8401 Westfield Blvd. Families with pets should go to the Broad Ripple Park Family Center at 1426 Broad Ripple Ave.

Rocky Ripple is being evacuated due to potential flooding.

IMPORTANT FLOOD INFORMATION – BROAD RIPPLE
Due to ongoing flooding and rising water levels, floodwall gates will be closed in the Broad Ripple area as a public safety precaution.

The affected area is bounded by:
• North College Avenue to the west
• East 67th Street to the south
• Westfield Boulevard to the east
• White River to the north
• Monon Area
Please see the map for the affected area.

The affected area includes nine homes, The Edgewater Apartments, area businesses, and the Indianapolis Art Center.

Residents, visitors, and businesses within this area are strongly urged to leave and be out of the affected area by 9:30 p.m., before the floodwall gates are closed.

Once the gates are closed, residents will not be able to access their homes, and emergency crews will not be able to access the affected area. Emergency officials are working to directly notify those within the impacted area.

Residents who need a safe place to shelter for the evening may go to the following shelter:

If you are evacuating, take essential medications, identification, a phone and charger, and necessary personal items with you.

Do not drive or walk through floodwater, and do not go around barricades. Follow all instructions from public safety personnel.
If you need assistance evacuating, call 211. Call 911 for emergencies.

Residents who evacuate are encouraged to remain outside the area until conditions improve and public safety officials advise it is safe to return. Continue to monitor official updates for changing conditions and additional instructions.
