There’s still time to apply for urban forestry grants through the Indiana DNR Division of Forestry's Community & Urban Forestry program. Available to municipalities, nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations, schools, places of worship, or higher education institutions, eligible projects include tree planting, tree inventories with management plans, urban tree canopy assessments, storm response planning. Funds are awarded on a reimbursable basis; a 1:1 match is required. Awards will be announced in October.

Apply online by Sept. 11 at on.IN.gov/cuf.

This year, the Indiana State Fair, is “Always a Hit!” Celebrating the national pastime of baseball, Indiana is home to a rich history of baseball teams, baseball clubs, and also featured in major films.
Sprudel Field opened in 1896 within the double-decker bicycle track on the grounds of the West Baden Hotel. Two teams composed of primarily African American employees played here in the early 1900s: the French Lick Plutos and the West Baden Sprudels (named for the mascots of the mineral water companies). From 1897 to 1922, 12 major league teams used the property for spring training events, conditioning workouts, or exhibition games. In 2023, the field was reconstructed in its original location with a gravel path laid where the bicycle path existed historically. This year, the Indiana State Fair, is “Always a Hit!” Celebrating the national pastime of baseball, Indiana is home to a rich history of baseball teams, baseball clubs, and also featured in major films.
Playland Park, formerly Springbrook Park, in South Bend, held its first baseball game on June 14, 1896, and it was home to South Bend baseball for decades. In the 1920s, teams were often formed by factory employees, including the Foundry Giants, made up of workers from the Studebaker foundries. Playland Park also hosted the South Bend Blue Sox, an All-American Girls Professional Baseball League team from 1943-1954. The park also featured a casino, exhibit hall, rollercoaster, and racetrack. This year, the Indiana State Fair, is “Always a Hit!” Celebrating the national pastime of baseball, Indiana is home to a rich history of baseball teams, baseball clubs, and also featured in major films.
League Stadium at 203 S. Cherry Street in Huntingburg was constructed in 1894. It is one of the notable filming sites for A League of Their Own, about the first female professional baseball league during World War II and the 1996 film Soul of the Game. Today, with a capacity of 2,783, it hosts the Dubois County Bombers and Southridge High School Raiders and hosts IHSAA Sectional and Regional baseball tournaments. Tree Check Month: A Growing Threat to Eastern Hemlock
As National Tree Check Month wraps up, meet one last invasive pest: the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), Adelges tsugae. This tiny insect feeds on eastern hemlock trees and can be positively identified by the presence of small, cotton‑like wax balls on the underside of needles. If you spot these “mini cotton balls,” report them — early detection helps protect Indiana’s forests.
HWA is spreading across the eastern hemlock’s range, now established in nearby Michigan and Ohio. Heavy infestations can cause trees to defoliate and die if untreated. Its waxy coating makes control challenging, and it spreads easily through nursery stock, wind, wildlife, and human activity. Help protect our hemlocks—stay alert and report suspect trees.
If you spot any unusual damage, contact the Division of Entomology and Plant Pathology by email at [email protected], by calling 1-866-NO-EXOTIC, or by reporting the pest here https://on.in.gov/report-pests. Remember to include your name, location, contact information and the pest you are contacting us about.
