Yesterday, loved ones honored the life and legacy of Warden LaShelle Brown, who passed away September 12, 2026.

Brown began her career with the DOC in February 1991, eventually becoming the warden of the Indiana Women's Prison in April of 2021. In total, she spent 34 years of her life with the Indiana Department of Correction.

She has been laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery.

We continue to extend our gratitude to Warden Brown for her years of leadership and integrity. ❤🇺🇸

Following an internal review, we can confirm this individual is not employed by DOC — and is not an employee at any State of Indiana agency. Further, their comments do not reflect the values of the department or the State of Indiana.

Small acts can make a big impact. It's all about giving back! 👍

On September 3, 2026, the Northwestern Jaycees—an offender run organization at the Indiana State Prison—donated 158,702 pop tabs, 100 crochet caps, and $6,750 to various charitable organizations. The checks were presented by President Ronald Williams. Representatives from the Ronald McDonald House (South Bend, IN) and Hoosier Burn Camp (Battle Ground, IN) were in attendance to receive their contributions.
“My mother taught me that when someone does something for you, you should look them in the eye and thank them. That is what I am doing today,” said Mark Koopman of Hoosier Burn Camp.
Additional donations were made to the Sojourner Truth House (Gary), Autism Society of Indiana, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and Boys Town, though representatives from these organizations were not present.
Warden Ron Neal, Deputy Warden Dawn Buss, and Correctional Coordinator Deb Osos all expressed their support and appreciation for this generous effort.

A fitting tribute, built by hand. 💙

In memory of late Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay and his legacy of giving back, incarcerated individuals at New Castle Correctional handcrafted a bench bearing his name. They are students in a woodworking course offered in partnership with Ivy Tech Community College.

The project brought together two things Irsay championed throughout his life: Indiana and opportunities for people to move forward.

We’re proud to partner with Ivy Tech to create opportunities like this — and honored to see that work become part of a lasting tribute to a Hoosier icon.

The IDOC is proud to partner with Ivy Tech Community College to provide high-quality educational services, including adult basic education such as GED instruction and vocational, career, and technical training with certifications to incarcerated individuals across the state.

Ivy Tech is hiring instructors to work within our facilities. These positions offer an opportunity to bring education and career training directly to students.

Another great Indiana State Fair is in the books! 🎡🎟️🎪

Throughout the fair, we had crews helping out with things like cleaning up and removing cattle pens, clearing saw dust, and transforming buildings for 4-H activities.

Thanks to all the incarcerated individuals and officers who helped make this year a success! 🐄🐷🍦
