Meet Daniel Walterman, a Senior Environmental Manager in IDEM’s Industrial Waste Compliance Section.

Originally from Indianapolis, he earned a Biology degree from Indiana University Bloomington. Before joining IDEM, Daniel worked for the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County.

In his role, he conducts inspections to evaluate how facilities manage, dispose of, and reuse solid waste. He also reviews reports and provides guidance to fellow staff members. Daniel has developed expertise in waste tire management and is credentialed to conduct EPA inspections related to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Outside of work, Daniel enjoys volunteering, paranormal investigations, Halloween decorating, traveling, watching sports, learning about history, and spending time with his wife and their many pets.

Hickory Dickory Dock! 🕰️ Earlier this month, IDEM responded to a dangerous mercury spill in Elkhart County from an unexpected source: a grandfather clock.

While the clock was being taken apart, liquid mercury 🌡️ from an old ballast leaked across the kitchen counter and floor. Despite the homeowner’s efforts to clean it up, mercury vapors quickly reached extremely high levels, prompting a coordinated response from IDEM, IDOH, and the U.S. EPA.

IDEM reminds Hoosiers that mercury can hide in older household items such as:
• Old fever thermometers
• Traditional thermostats
• Certain light bulbs and switches
• Older gas appliances, auto parts, and industrial equipment
• Some antiques and novelty items

Even small amounts of mercury release harmful vapors. If you suspect a mercury spill:
• Keep people and pets away.
• Do not vacuum or sweep.
• Call the IDEM Spill Line at (888) 233‑7745 for guidance.

August is National Water Quality Month!🌊

IDEM’s Office of Water Quality (OWQ) works to monitor, protect, and improve Indiana’s water so it remains safe to drink, supports wildlife, offers recreation, and strengthens the economy.

Indiana is a national leader in water assessment. We have sampled more than 40,000 miles of rivers, giving us one of the most comprehensive snapshots of water health in the country. 💧

Last year, Indiana ranked number one in EPA-designated Success Stories with 13 documented water restoration achievements driven by strong partnerships and efforts to reduce nonpoint source pollution.

Meet Kim Rohr, IDEM’s Wastewater Inspections and Operator Certification Section Chief.

Originally from Indianapolis, she earned a degree in Natural Resources and Environmental Science from Purdue University and holds Class IV and Class D wastewater operator licenses. Before joining IDEM, Kim worked at wastewater treatment plants in Fishers and Zionsville.

Today, Kim oversees wastewater inspectors and operator certification staff, reviews inspection reports, and provides technical assistance to facilities. She is especially passionate about IDEM’s Operator Certification Prep Class, which helps future operators prepare for certification exams.

When she’s not working, Kim enjoys kayaking, spending time outdoors, and cheering on Purdue Basketball.

HAPPY NATIONAL INTERN DAY! 🎉

A group of IDEM summer interns recently headed out to the Twin Bridges Landfill in Danville for a firsthand look at how modern waste management works. Landfills play a crucial role in protecting public health and the environment by safely managing the waste streams our communities generate. ♻️

Experiences like this give our interns valuable field exposure, showing how operations run on the ground and how materials are handled.

As this year’s intern cohort wraps up their summer with IDEM, we’re grateful for their hard work, curiosity, and enthusiasm. We can’t wait to see all the ways they continue to grow and excel in their careers. 💼
