Civil Rights 101: What are protected classes?

Protected classes are groups of people who are legally protected from discrimination under Indiana civil rights law.

In Indiana, protections based on race, color, religion, s*x, disability, national origin, ancestry, age 40 and over in employment, familial status in housing, and military/veteran status.

These protections apply in areas such as employment, housing, public accommodations, education, and credit.

Today, the Indiana Civil Rights Commission was proud to partner with the Indianapolis Urban League for a presentation with their New Beginnings Program.

Our team shared an overview of ICRC’s work and how we serve Hoosiers across the state, followed by a discussion on alternative dispute resolution and how mediation can help resolve discrimination complaints in a fair and timely way.

There are many misconceptions about housing discrimination.

Landlords cannot refuse to rent for unlawful reasons.

Reasonable accommodations can be requested when needed.

And filing deadlines are based on when the alleged act of discrimination occurred, not whether you have moved.

Indiana law protects individuals in housing based on specific characteristics.
