A Child Advocacy Center is designed to be a safe, child-friendly environment where children, who have been the victims of physical or sexual abuse, can talk about the trauma they have experienced and begin the healing process. Law enforcement officials, the District Attorney’s Office, Juvenile Court, the Department of Children’s Services and other agencies who are involved in the investigation, pr

osecution and treatment of child abuse cases all come together as a cohesive unit to work for the child’s best interests. The first thing you will notice about our Advocacy Centers is how much they look like homes instead of office or clinical settings. This is done so that the child does not feel threatened by his or her surroundings; thus, the focus can be on the healing process rather than the unfamiliar environment. The Advocacy Center allows each child’s needs to remain the focal point of the process, rather than transporting the child from agency to agency for the grueling process of discovery, medical exams and treatment.

In therapy, art is an important form of expression. With this exercise, colors were assigned to feelings, and the child was instructed to use the colors to show where certain feelings live in their body.

How do you interpret this picture?

I see angry hands that ball into fists in an attempt to hold the feelings inside. I feel the sadness in head that the child tries to mask with happiness in an attempt to feel normal again. I see fear in a private area that was touched without consent which is surrounded by guilt in the stomach because the child feels that what happened may be their fault. Nervousness is found in the feet and knees as they are unsure of what their next steps forward look like after the abuse.

A young child may not have the words and language to vocalize such feelings, but art gave them a voice. The Carl Perkins Center gave them a voice and aided this child on their path to healing. When you support the center, you support healing such as this 💙🩵
