Twenty-five years ago, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the heroic sacrifice of the passengers on United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania left an indelible mark on this great nation. Alaska's workers are the backbone of our economy. Labor Day is a state and national holiday, celebrating the dedication, resilience and hard work of America's workers who keep our communities strong and our state moving forward. Thank you for everything you do!

In observance of the Labor Day holiday, all our DOLWD offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026. All offices will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

𝗦𝗦𝗔 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: Leadership from Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOLWD), Office of the Governor and Social Security Administration met in Anchorage a few weeks ago to discuss objectives for the new fiscal year. DOLWD is proud to maintain a strong working partnership with SSA. Together, we’re focused on improving how we serve Alaskans by strengthening coordination, streamlining processes and ensuring that individuals and families receive the support they need.
It was great to connect with partners who are together committee to continue building a more effective and responsive system for all Alaskans.

𝗗𝗢𝗟𝗪𝗗 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿!
On Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development staff spent the day staffing the State of Alaska booth at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer. Department staff shared information about the department, answered questions about how we support Alaskans at work and highlighted the many programs and services available to residents across the state. Make sure to stop by the State of Alaska booth at the fair to meet representatives from other departments.

On Aug. 13, 2026, DOLWD Commissioner Cathy Muñoz and AVTEC Director Cory Ortiz met with Dr. Kirk Nooks, President of the Council of Occupational Education, the national organization that accredits AVTEC programs. AVTEC's accreditation allows students to access federal training support and ensures the quality and consistency of its training programs.

This week, DOLWD Commissioner Cathy Muñoz, Deputy Commissioner Adam Weinert, Acting Special Assistant Becky Weimer, and Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Director Kate Duder visited the Alaska Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The Center supports Alaskans of any age that are experiencing vision loss to receive rehabilitation services and learn new skills for life and employment using assistive technologies.
The DOLWD team met with Center Executive Director Nate Kile to learn how the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation works closely with the Center to support Alaskans with vision loss. The Center’s Manual Skills Instructor, Kevin Whitley toured the team through the Center’s woodshop where clients get skills in woodworking, and practical home maintenance experience.

Join staff from DOLWD’s Alaska Labor Relations Agency and the Workers’ Compensation Division at the 3rd Annual Legal Career Fair & Reception on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Egan Convention Center in Anchorage!
Hosted by our friends from both the Alaska and Anchorage Bar associations and welcoming employers from around the state, this event offers a valuable opportunity to connect with employers hiring for a variety of positions in Alaska’s legal community.
No fees or registration are required for entrance.
