Sam has been brightening GHS for the past year. She started her journey as a behavioral health receptionist, but quickly realized her talents were calling her elsewhere. Just three months in, she transitioned to billing and compliance, and we haven't looked back since.

When she's not keeping our systems running smoothly, Sam is a master crocheter (seriously, her work is incredible). She also loves paddleboarding, soaking up the festival scene, and channeling her inner Rachel Ray in the kitchen, baking like she was born to do it.

One of Sam's favorite things about working at GHS? The diverse personalities and the solid sense of humor that comes with them. In her role specifically, nothing beats watching clients reach their goals and successfully graduate the program. Witnessing people arrive at the place they worked so hard to reach has been incredibly rewarding and heartfelt.

Sam's advice? Never let anyone make you feel bad or guilty for setting a boundary. People don't have to like your boundaries, but they do need to respect them. If they don't, that's their problem - not yours.

On any given day, you'll find Sam rocking funky fresh wear paired with fabulous glasses, and a smile on her face. GHS searched for a billing and compliance person for a long time, and we couldn't be happier to have found her!

Gastineau Human Services was proud to participate in the 2026 Pathways to Recovery Conference in Anchorage, bringing together behavioral health professionals, public health leaders, policymakers, first responders, peer support specialists, and community organizations from across Alaska to strengthen prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts statewide.

During the conference, Executive Director Mike Helms and Behavioral Health Director Fred Sweetski had the opportunity to connect with partners and stakeholders working to address Alaskaโ€™s complex behavioral health and substance use challenges through collaboration, innovation, and community-centered care.

Fred also presented a breakout session titled โ€œWhen It Gets Personal: Managing Countertransference in SUD Care,โ€ which focused on helping professionals recognize and manage emotional reactions that can influence engagement, boundaries, decision-making, and burnout when working with individuals experiencing substance use disorders.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside and collaborate with so many dedicated professionals committed to improving behavioral health outcomes across Alaska.

Our intake process has two main steps:

1๏ธโƒฃDocumentation Processing at Reception - Staff provide intake forms and discuss payment options (insurance or other funding).
2๏ธโƒฃAssessment Scheduling - After paperwork is completed, an appointment is made with a Clinician to evaluate personal goals, treatment needs, and program placement eligibility for our services such as:

A Resident Advisor (RA) at Glacier Manor Community Residential Center (CRC) plays a crucial role in daily operations, with primary responsibilities focused on providing campus security, encouraging resident accountability, and enforcing CRC and GHS program policies in a fair and professional manner. RA's help residents comply with legal and societal expectations for successful reintegration while assisting other departments with program compliance and security.
