📣 We want to hear from you about College Road!
 
Alaska DOT&PF, in cooperation with Fairbanks Area Surface Transportation (FAST) Planning, is asking the community to share their thoughts on a proposed restriping project on College Road between Margaret Avenue/Antoinette Avenue and University Avenue.

The proposal would include one lane in each direction and a center two-way-left-turn lane to help drivers access nearby driveways, businesses and side streets.

🚧 SEWARD HIGHWAY / PATHWAY WORK

Non-motorized pathway users should expect temporary closures while crews complete pathway improvements along the Seward Highway between milepost 90-99.

📅 Scheduled pathway work:
• Today (Sept. 3)
• Sept. 8–11
• Sept. 14–18

⏰ Temporary closures: 7:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m.

A shuttle will be available to transport pathway users from one end of the active work zone to the other during work hours.

Meanwhile, highway milling and paving will continue during the night shift. Please use caution around crews and equipment, and plan for additional time when traveling through the area. Please remember that all work is weather dependent and subject to change.

What are those weather stations along Alaska’s highways?
 
They’re part of DOT&PF’s Road Weather Information System (RWIS), and they do much more than measure temperature.
 
RWIS stations can collect information about:
• Pavement temperature and conditions
• Pavement grip, which helps indicate how slippery the road may be
• Air temperature and humidity
• Wind and precipitation
• Snow depth and other weather conditions
• Roadway conditions through cameras
 
Some pavement sensors can also measure conditions below the road surface.
 
This real-time information helps maintenance crews decide when and where to deploy people and equipment. It supports efficient winter maintenance and helps reduce travelers’ exposure to hazardous road conditions.

On this day in 1935, the first bridge connecting Douglas Island with Juneau unofficially opened. In the early morning of September 2, 1935, the first car crossed the nearly-completed bridge. It contained eight Douglas friends, including Douglas mayor, A.E. Goetz. Juneau mayor, Izzy Goldstein, hosted the group for breakfast after the crossing. The official opening of the 66.4 ft. Juneau-Douglas Bridge took place on October 13, 1935.

O.H. Stratton designed the bridge, and Ike Taylor was its chief engineer; both worked for the Alaska Road Commission (now Alaska DOT&PF). The bridge, funded primarily by federal New Deal programs, cost around $250,000.

Prior to the bridge’s construction, residents would either row across Gastineau Channel or use a triangular ferry service operated from Douglas to Juneau to Thane.

🚧 Scheduled Dalton Highway CLOSURE

The Dalton Highway will be closed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 3 at MP 314.5 to 316 due to a culvert replacement.

Motorists can expect continued single-lane traffic and 24-hour flagging operations between MP 314.5 and MP 316. Please plan ahead, use caution around crews and equipment, and thank you for your patience while this work is underway.
