🌲 ONE Message, ONE Goal: A Safer Alaska 🌲

Alaska, we know that wildfire season isn't a matter of "if," but "when." To make sure every Alaskan is prepared, the State of Alaska is joining forces with Emergency Managers from across the state to streamline how we talk about evacuations.

We are working to ensure that no matter where you are- from the Kenai Peninsula to the Interior- we are all using the same terminology, the same colors, and the same messaging.

Why does this matter? In an emergency, every second counts. Confusion costs time. By adopting a universal "Ready, Set, Go!" framework, we ensure that when you see a notification, you know exactly what it means and what you need to do to keep your family safe.

🔥 READY 🟢(Green): Preparedness. Have your plan and your "Go-Bag" ready.

🔥 SET 🟡 (Yellow): Awareness. There is a significant threat in your area. Be prepared to leave at a moment's notice.

🔥 GO! 🔴 (Red): Immediate Evacuation. Leave now!

Taking it to the Finish Line

🏛️ This isn't just a suggestion- we are working with the Legislature through HJR 15 to urge statewide coordination and make these standards the official law of the land. We’re pushing for:

âś… Consistent statewide public awareness campaigns.

âś… Multi-agency evacuation drills before the heat of the season hits.

âś… Clear, unified emergency notifications that Alaskans can trust.

We are stronger when we work together. Let’s make the 2026 season the most prepared one yet!

Today, May 3, 2026, the City of Kenai Fire Department joins communities across the nation in honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

On National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day, we pause to remember their courage, their service, and their unwavering commitment to protecting others. Their legacy lives on in every call answered, every life saved, and every firefighter who continues to serve with honor.

We stand with the families, friends, and departments who carry their memory forward. We will never forget.

We are grateful for our Nikiski responders and the times we get to work side-by-side. KFD knows your sacrifice and we are proud to serve the peninsula with you all. 👨🏻‍🚒

Frequently asked questions: How many hours do we actually work—and what does that look like over a career?

Short answer: a lot.

Nikiski firefighters average 56-hour weeks. Most jobs are 40. That’s 16 extra hours every single week. Add in a 24-hour overtime shift, and now you’re looking at an 80-hour week.

Over a 25-year career? That stacks up to 20,000+ extra hours on the job.

That’s basically working an extra 10 years compared to a normal 40-hour job.

And it’s not office time.

It’s middle-of-the-night calls. Interrupted sleep. Missed holidays, weekends, and time with family. It’s staying ready to go at any moment—no matter the situation.
