After 25 years of dedicated service to the Ketchikan Police Department and our community, Lieutenant Berntson has officially answered one final call…

Retirement.

If we’re being honest, we thought last months 25-year celebration was just that—a celebration. We didn’t think he’d actually leave us. 😏

Throughout his career, Lt. Berntson has been a steady leader, trusted mentor, and unwavering example of professionalism and integrity. He has guided countless officers, served this community with compassion and commitment, and left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to work alongside him.

Congratulations, Lieutenant Berntson!!! You will be deeply missed… From all of us at KPD—thank you for your 25 years of service, your friendship, your guidance, and your unwavering dedication to the badge and to the people of Ketchikan.

Now go enjoy retirement—we promise we’ll try not to call you with questions. (No promises, though.)

Today, we proudly celebrate Lieutenant Andy Berntson and an incredible milestone—25 years of service with the Ketchikan Police Department.

For a quarter century, Lieutenant Berntson has served the City of Ketchikan with unwavering dedication, professionalism, and integrity. Through challenging times and moments of triumph, he has remained a steady and trusted leader, committed to protecting our community and supporting those around him.

His impact extends far beyond the badge. Through his involvement in local baseball, Coach Berntson has spent countless hours mentoring young athletes, teaching teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, and perseverance. Generations of Ketchikan youth have benefited from his guidance, encouragement, and positive example both on and off the field.

Ketchikan Pretrial Services Supervisor Steve Hayburn and Ketchikan Police Officer Kim Monk have completed the Crisis Response & Intervention Train-the-Trainer Program in Palmer, Alaska.

Based on the nationally recognized CIT Memphis Model, this intensive training focused on crisis recognition, de-escalation, trauma-informed response, su***de awareness, and connecting individuals in crisis with appropriate resources and support.

As graduates of this 32 hour course training, Steve and Kim will be equipped to help expand crisis intervention training opportunities throughout our community, strengthening local response efforts and help improve outcomes for individuals experiencing mental health and behavioral health emergencies.

Thank you both for your commitment to public safety and serving our community with compassion and professionalism.
