The Ketchikan Police Department and partner agencies will be conducting a planned EMERGENCY RESPONSE EXERCISE in the Schoenbar Road area. The drill will be on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 8 a.m. To 2 p.m.

During the exercise:
• Schoenbar Road will be closed from the Valley Forge Road intersection, across from the Valley Park School parking lot, to the Park Avenue intersection near the skatepark from approximately 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please avoid the area while the exercise is underway.

• Residents in the affected area may leave, but will not be able to return until the exercise is complete.

• Simulated gunfire and other emergency response activity may be heard. These sounds are part of the planned exercise and do not indicate an actual emergency.

• Role players portraying victims may be transported from the scene to Ketchikan Medical Center as part of the exercise.

• Ketchikan Bus riders should refer to the Transit app or call (907) 225-8726 for detour information.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as local agencies use this exercise to practice emergency response procedures.

Internet Outage - Update 5:34pm Internet has been restored. Update 4:55 pm Restoration expected at 6 pm. Credit will appear on next bill. update 3:50 pm, crews are onsite at the Whitecourt fiber cut which has been confirmed to be thieves searching for copper. We are awaiting update from them regarding the time to repair. Alternate paths are limited due to fires in Canada. update 10:15 am. Primary City West fiber path through Clinton was burned in wildfire (see image) secondary (redundant) path through Rogers Communication is experiencing large fiber cut due to thieves in both Calgary, AB and Whitecourt, AB. Our partner City West is working on securing a third party path.

After 25 years of dedicated service to the Ketchikan Police Department and our community, Lieutenant Berntson has officially answered one final call…

Retirement.

If we’re being honest, we thought last months 25-year celebration was just that—a celebration, win many more years to follow. We didn’t think he’d actually leave us. 😏

Throughout his career, Lt. Berntson has been a steady leader, trusted mentor, and unwavering example of professionalism and integrity. He has guided countless officers, served this community with compassion and commitment, and left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to work alongside him.

Congratulations, Lieutenant Berntson!!! You will be deeply missed… From all of us at KPD—thank you for your 25 years of service, your friendship, your guidance, and your unwavering dedication to the badge and to the people of Ketchikan.

Now go enjoy retirement—we promise we’ll try not to call you with questions. (No promises, though.)
