Kilgore Police Department

Kilgore Police Department Kilgore Police Department, for the City of Kilgore, TX. We are genuinely concerned with the well being of all of our Citizens and visitors to our city.
(414)

The Kilgore Police Department was established in 1931 along with the City of Kilgore shortly after the Famous East Texas Oil Boom. During the boom Kilgore became the geographic center of the oil field and an acre of downtown Kilgore was given the title of “World’s Richest Acre.” Kilgore continues to have a major role in the oil industry. The Kilgore Police Department now serves a population of 13

,000 with 36 sworn police officers and a total of 56 employees. The Kilgore Police Department is one of the most progressive and effective departments in East Texas maintaining a dual philosophy of balancing a hard-hitting approach against crime while maintaining strong community policing values. We hold our motto “Serving our Community” as more than just words on paper but something we put into action every day and all members subscribe to the Department’s core values of Service, Respect, Integrity, Professionalism, Accountability and Compassion. This concern is captured in our vision statement:

The Kilgore Police Department will set the standard for a safe and crime free community through service, professionalism and excellence in policing. This high standard will result in our citizens having a premier quality of life with a strong sense of security, free from crime and fear anywhere within the City of Kilgore. The Kilgore Police Department is committed to maintaining quality service for the Kilgore community with highly trained, professional and dedicated employees. High standards, quality training and a rigorous selection process ensure only the best police officers are selected for Kilgore and we continually strive to give our officers and employees quality equipment along with the latest technology available. The Kilgore Police Department is a full service department open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days of the year with access to administrative staff and the records department during normal business hours. On February 15, 2013, the Kilgore Police Department received the award of “Recognized Law Enforcement Agency” from the Texas Police Chiefs Association Law Enforcement Recognition Program. Begun in 2006, the Recognition Program evaluates a Police Department’s compliance with over 165 Best Business Practices for Texas Law Enforcement. These Best Practices were carefully developed by Texas Law Enforcement professionals to assist agencies in the efficient and effective delivery of service and the protection of individual’s rights. These Best Practices cover all aspects of law enforcement operations including use of force, protection of citizen rights, vehicle pursuits, property and evidence management, and patrol and investigative operations. Dear Residents,

We have recently seen an increase in bicycle thefts throughout the area. While we have successfully recovered many of these bicycles and returned them to their owners, we want to emphasize the importance of theft prevention.

As an update to recent activity, officers located several bicycles this morning that were stolen last night. Two suspects—one adult and one juvenile—have been taken into custody.

To help protect your property, please keep the following safety tips in mind:

- Store bikes out of sight: Keep your bicycles in a secure area or indoors when not in use.
- Lock your bike: Always use a lock if your bike must be left unattended. Locks are relatively inexpensive and widely available at local retailers like Walmart.
- Keep records: Write down your bike’s serial number and take photos. This information is vital if the bicycle needs to be identified or recovered later.

Prevention is always the best defense. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community safe.

We are pleased to announce that the April Employee of the Month is Lieutenant Trae Portwood.
Trae currently serves as the Support Lieutenant and has been exceptionally busy managing several major projects. He was nominated for his outstanding work in juggling multiple high-priority initiatives throughout April, including:
- Dispatch Console Upgrade: Trae oversaw the final implementation of our transition from analog to digital consoles to support the new radio system.
- Infrastructure Improvements: He successfully implemented additional fiber lines for redundancy.
- Cloud Migration: He managed the migration of our on-premise video storage to the cloud.
- Fleet Coordination: Trae handled the procurement of equipment and installation vendor quotes for our new vehicles.

Trae worked effectively with multiple vendors to complete all of these projects efficiently. Please join me in congratulating Lieutenant Portwood on this well-deserved recognition.

Wednesday evening, a citizen found a small black box in the roadway. Upon closer inspection, the box contained several bags of pills, so Mr. Citizen called us. Our staff determined the pills were Ecstacy (M**A). The weight of the pills is just under 90 grams, so we know someone is desperate to be relocated with their product. Don't worry, we will keep your product safe until you can come and take ownership. We just need you to describe the box, and it is yours again.
If you don't come by soon, we can print the box and see if we can reunite you and your drugs.

It’s been a busy day, and before Flag Day comes to a close, the men and women of the Kilgore Police Department wanted to take a moment to recognize the Stars and Stripes.
Today, we honor the flag that has stood as a symbol of our nation’s history, freedoms, and the sacrifices of those who have served to protect them. Even though we’re getting this posted a little later than planned, the meaning behind Flag Day is no less important. As the day winds down, we encourage everyone to take a moment to appreciate what our flag represents and the many Americans who have helped preserve the ideals it stands for.

Happy Flag Day from the Kilgore Police Department.

Like to know what is going on in the city? There is always a lot going on, and if you click the link you will get the City Manager's biweekly report. Let's make it positive. We see social media and understand citizens have legitimate concerns, but the city staff works diligently on those. Yes, we know people want more roads fixed, but your taxes would skyrocket. Engineers plan to keep good roads in good condition and redo others, but there is only so much money and personnel.
In the end, it is best to focus on the good around us rather than fixate on the negative. The Kilgore Public Library is literally the best in ETX. Reading is the foundation of learning, and if you want your kids to flourish, get them involved. They elevate learning for our kids all year! Your Public Safety staff are some of the most dedicated around. Our city pool is a gem, and generations have enjoyed it. Kilgore is a great city, so let's celebrate the good happening here in K-Town every day.
