Today, like many of the students in our area, Lake Worth Police Officer Ramirez had his first day as a school resource officer at Lucyle Collins Middle School with Lake Worth ISD !

As you share back‑to‑school board photos, just a quick friendly reminder to keep safety in mind. Try to avoid including things like your child’s full name, school, or teacher, those little details can give scammers or predators more information than we realize. Keeping boards simple with a first name, grade, and a fun fact (or sharing milestones privately) is an easy way to stay safe. Wishing everyone a happy and safe school year!

Happy First day of school Lake Worth! 💚💚💚

Here are some sschool bus safety tips that were shared by our partners at TxDOT.

🚍School bus drivers do everything they can to keep children safe, but motorists are also responsible for driving safely around school buses. In 2025, 7 people were killed and 85 seriously injured in the 2,358 crashes involving school buses in Texas. Speeding and distracted driving were the top contributing factors in those crashes.

Tips for drivers sharing the road with school buses 🚍🛻
Follow school buses at a safe distance, keeping in mind that they make frequent stops.

Keep an eye out for children exiting the bus and crossing the street. 🏃‍♀️‍➡️🏃‍➡️🛑
Do not pass a school bus if you see flashing red lights or an extended stop sign regardless of which direction you’re headed, unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway. Continue once the bus has moved, the lights stop flashing, or the bus driver signals it’s okay to pass.
Violations can lead to a fine of up to $1,250 for a first offense.

Tips for students
Stand as far back from the curb as possible when you are waiting for a bus.
Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop and watch for the driver to signal that it’s safe to board.
Listen to the bus driver and remain seated to avoid distracting the driver.
When exiting the bus, cross only in front of the bus, never behind it. Make eye contact with the driver and wait for the driver’s signal that it’s safe to cross the street.

🚸 Drive Smart in School Zones: Keep Kids Safe This School Year! 🚗

As families gear up for back‑to‑school season, Texas drivers should also prepare for the return of school‑related traffic. That means slowing down, staying alert, and paying extra attention in school zones and around school buses.

School zones can get chaotic—with rushed mornings, kids hopping in and out of cars, and buses loading and unloading. Unfortunately, this leads to preventable crashes. In 2025, Texas saw 877 school‑zone traffic crashes (a 12% increase!) and 2,358 collisions involving school buses. Distracted driving and speeding were the top causes.

TxDOT reminds everyone: your attention can save a life.

🏃‍♀️‍➡️🎒🚴‍♂️Tips for Children Walking or Biking to School:
• Use sidewalks when available. If not, walk on the left side facing traffic.
• Cross only at intersections or crosswalks. Look left, right, and left again.
• Always follow crossing guards.
• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing—never assume they see you.
• Be alert stepping off buses or from behind parked cars.
• Wear a helmet when biking or scootering.
• Avoid distractions like phones or headphones.

🚙🚗Tips for Drivers in School Zones:
• Watch for flashing school zone lights and obey speed limits—fines are higher there.
• Stay alert and keep your phone out of reach. Using a handheld device in an active school zone is illegal.
• Stop and yield to people in crosswalks.
• Use only designated drop‑off/pick‑up areas.
• Watch for kids at bus stops and those who may cross unexpectedly.

Let’s all do our part to make this school year safer for every child. 💛💚

Slow down. Stay alert. Drive smart.

Thanks to our partners at TxDOT for these tips for driving safe in school zones.

We’ve added a fun back‑to‑school coloring page featuring our Lake Worth School Resource Officers! It’s a fun little activity for families to enjoy together during the last weekend before school starts. Print off the coloring page or stop by the lobby of the police department to get one.
