With warmer weather arriving, the Lebanon Police Department is reminding residents never to leave dogs unattended in parked vehicles, even for a short period of time.

The Lebanon Police Department has been receiving numerous reports daily regarding dogs left unattended in vehicles throughout the city. While many owners may believe they will only be away for a few minutes, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly, creating dangerous and potentially deadly conditions for pets.

Even when outdoor temperatures seem comfortable, the interior of a parked car can quickly become hot enough to cause heat-related illness.

Dogs are especially susceptible to heat because they cool themselves primarily through panting. When exposed to excessive heat, they can suffer from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, organ failure, and death within a matter of minutes.

The Lebanon Police Department encourages pet owners to:
β€’ Leave pets at home when running errands.
β€’ Ensure dogs have access to shade and fresh water when outdoors.
β€’ Plan activities with pets carefully during warm weather.
β€’ Never rely on cracked windows to keep a vehicle cool.

Every call regarding a dog left in a vehicle requires a police response to assess the animal's welfare and determine whether intervention is necessary. These situations are often preventable.

On Friday, June 26, 2026, Officers from the Lebanon Police Department, and community members, will come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee. All community members are invited to attend.

This event will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Target, 200 S Main Street, West Lebanon, NH.

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work in Lebanon’s neighborhoods.

The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community and some community members may feel that Officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are held across the country, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.

The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between Police Officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time.
