As temperatures start to drop across Wisconsin, it's time to turn on the heat. Before cranking up your thermostat for the season, make sure your heating systems are safe and ready to go:

• Have a professional inspect your furnace annually.
• Make sure you replace the furnace filter to allow proper airflow.
• Keep clear space around space heaters and furnaces.
• Test your carbon monoxide detectors alongside your smoke alarms.

A few simple maintenance steps today help protect your home all winter long.

This Saturday, September 19, the IAFF will gather in Colorado Springs for the 40th annual Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial. PFFW members from throughout Wisconsin will be attending to honor our fallen brothers and sisters and stand beside their families.

This year, 288 fallen members will have their names added to the Wall of Honor.

Thank you to the members of Colorado Springs Local 5 for the year-round work that goes into preparing for this event and for taking care of the needs of our members, Honor Guard members and families while they are in Colorado Springs.

Honoring our fallen is one of the most important things we do. We remember their service, their sacrifice and the families who continue to carry their memory.

The ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m. Central Time and will be available by livestream for those unable to attend.

May we never forget.

Every September, fire fighters, emergency medical workers, and their families gather in Colorado Springs to honor those who have died in the line of duty.

As members from across the PFFW gather in New York City to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, we remember the 343 members of the FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice that day.

They entered the World Trade Center knowing the danger ahead of them because people needed help. Their courage, selflessness and commitment to duty represent the very best of the fire service.

We also remember the police officers, emergency responders, construction workers and volunteers who worked at Ground Zero in the days and months that followed. Many returned home carrying illnesses caused by their exposure at the site, and the number of lives lost continues to grow.

Behind every name is a family, a firehouse and a community that still feels their absence. Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor their service, support those still suffering and keep alive the promise that their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The members of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin stand with our brothers and sisters in New York and with every family forever changed by that day.

Never Forget.

Just 20 minutes apart, firefighters responded to two apartment building fires in Dane County. The outcomes tell an important story.

At a Madison apartment building, a fire sprinkler activated and kept the fire contained while fire crews arrived to fully extinguish the fire. No one was injured. No one was displaced.

At a Fitchburg apartment building without sprinklers, firefighters arrived to smoke and flames coming from the roof. Crews quickly brought the fire under control and everyone escaped safely, but every resident was displaced because of the smoke and fire damage.

Fire sprinklers save lives. They protect property. They slow the spread of fire and give residents precious time to escape.

Firefighters will always answer the call, but the safest fire is one controlled before it has the chance to grow. These two fires are a powerful reminder of why strong fire and building codes matter.

Milwaukee Laborfest!

PFFW members joined union brothers and sisters from across Wisconsin to celebrate what Labor Day is really about, working people standing together.

Great seeing David Crowley, Senator Tammy Baldwin, Dan Bukiewicz and so many friends of organized labor out supporting Wisconsin workers.

We’re especially proud of the members of Oak Creek Professional Firefighters Local 1848 who represented the fire service in the Honor Guard. Thank you, brothers and sisters, for representing all of us so well.

The rights and benefits we have today didn’t just happen. Generations of workers fought for them, and it’s on all of us to keep that fight going.

Better wages. Better benefits. A safer workplace. A voice on the job.

Life is better in a union.
