Wow it's gotten smokey in the last couple hours!

We've received several calls for smoke in the area. This coming from the northeast of us, mostly from BC. There are no fires in our area.

Please don't call 911 to report the wildfire smoke.

Aug. 21, 2026 at 11:40 AM: And with all that smoke pouring into the outflow area, air quality has plummeted into the red and purple colors. Not good!

See prior posts for more info on today's smoke intrusion.

We've had a string of false alarm calls, where callers are reporting structure fires near Cimarron Way these last few weeks.

Please remember that old phones aren't toys for your kids, and can still call 911!

After being home for 3 days, we're off to another state mobilization! T93 was deployed this afternoon to the Little Giant Fire, a 97,500 acre fire near Leavenworth.

State mobilization is how communities like ours get more resources when the need occurs. These deployments can last up to 2 weeks.

It's a beautiful evening for a CPR/First Aid class in Sumas!

Huge thanks to the fine folks at Kelley Insurance Agency & Financial Services, Inc. for their continued sponsorship of our community CPR program.

Another 32 citizens are now ready to help their neighbors!

To our community:

Recently, a mailer was sent out by the IAFF Local 106 union, concerning local fire levies that are on the ballot. In the mailer, they list Sumas as a community that would face station closures, emergency staff shortages, and increased response times should the ballot measures fail. This claim is false.

To be clear, Whatcom County Fire District 14, which serves the City of Sumas, does not have a levy on the ballot this year.

The Sumas fire station is not closing, and remains in normal operation, with our volunteer firefighters serving the residents of Sumas and the outlying areas as they always have.

While important for the communities where the districts are running levies, the results of the fire levies on the current ballot will have no effect on our area as those districts do not serve Sumas, Kendall or Welcome.

Voters last approved a levy lid lift in 2023 for our fire district, and we appreciate the support our community has given us over the years. There are no plans to run another levy lid lift in the near future for our District.

And we're off to another state mobilization! T9102 has been deployed to the Railroad Fire, a 5,442 acre fire burning near Mattawa, WA.

These deployments can last up to 2 weeks, and are how communities like ours get more help when local resources are exhausted.

It's been plenty warm and dry on our side of the mountains too, so please be careful out there!

We're getting some wildfire smoke coming into our area today. There are no fires locally.

We are still at a Stage II burn ban, no campfires allowed. Please don't call 911 to report the smell of smoke in the area.

Do call 911 if you see smoke rising, or can see flame, and we'll be happy to come and put it out!

Most of this smoke is coming from our Canadian neighbors, who have fires NE of us. Take a look at the wildfire maps for BC and WA. It's definitely getting dry out!

Stay safe out there!
