Last week, we welcomed our newest ambulance into service, and played a bit of musical ambulances to get all the equipment and supplies moved into the newest unit.

The new ambulance is in service at our Kendall Station, which allows us to surplus one of our three 1998 ambulances still in service.

A huge thank you to Braun Northwest Inc. for the their hard work building the new unit, Communications Northwest for their radio work, TNT Signs & Promotional Products Inc. for the vehicle decals, and all the volunteer firefighters that spent time helping us switch everything around.

We'll have the surplus unit ready for auction later this month!

We'd like to thank the great folks at Williams, for their extraordinary donation of $15,000 towards rebuilding our Sumas station, and purchasing an equipment trailer to store our Aquadam system.

Not just the quiet neighbor to our east, Williams has been a fantastic partner over the many years they've been in our area, providing training for their facility, providing grants like this one, and sponsoring numerous events and organizations in our community!

We're excited to get repairs finished up, and get back to our regular community events in the station!

Update: Fire Protection Rating Changes (WSRB)

We want to share an important update from the Washington Surveying and Rating Bureau (WSRB) that impact fire protection classes for our state, especially the rural properties in our area.

Protection classes range from 1-10, (With Class 1 being the best (Think Seattle Fire Dept), and 10 being unprotected). Within 5 road miles of our stations, WCFD 14's protection classes are a 5 inside the City of Sumas, and a 6 outside the city limits.

WSRB has added a new "W" protection class type for properties that are between 5 and 7 road miles from a fire station, for departments that receive "Tender Credit" from the WSRB (Like District 14 does), or if there's a hydrant within 1000 ft of the home.

What does this mean?

For an example, a home in the district is 6 miles away from both our Sumas and Kendall stations, putting them beyond the standard 5 mile distance previously used by WSRB. The old protection class for the home is 9. With the new rating system, the home now has a protection class of 6W.

This could mean significant savings for your fire insurance, so please contact your insurance company and see what kind of difference this can make for your property!

Whatcom County Fire District 14 has received a major boost in flood preparedness — thanks to a generous donation from Aqua Dam!

The district was gifted a 6‑foot‑diameter, 420‑foot-long, water filled Aqua Dam flood‑control barrier, valued at $44,665, which can be deployed around the Sumas Fire Station in about 7 hours. This system is engineered to protect the station from up to 54 inches of floodwater.

After repeated flooding from the Nooksack River — including the December 2025 event, the fourth major flood in five years,
“This donation allows us to protect the station and keep our units responding when the people we serve need us most,” said Chief Jerry DeBruin.

While the station may still be inaccessible during a flood, this barrier will help ensure it can return to service quickly once waters recede.

A huge thank‑you to Aqua Dam Inc. for supporting our community’s resilience and helping safeguard essential emergency‑response infrastructure.

Check out www.aquadam.net to see all the other projects they've helped people with!

Always exciting to see a new apparatus in progress!

The good folks at Braun Northwest Inc. in Chehalis are hard at work building our next ambulance, which will be stationed at our Kendall Station.

With delivery scheduled for late April, look for the unit to be in service in early May. The district operates 6 BLS ambulances, two at each of our stations.

This new unit will allow us to surplus one of our 1999 models, which should be available on auction shortly after!
