When we say mobile artillery, we mean it!

Last week during Sentry Storm 2021, the 167th Airlift Wing, 123rd Airlift Wing - Kentucky Air National Guard and B-Battery, 1st Battalion, 623rd Field Artillery Regiment, Kentucky National Guard conducted a joint mission exercise involving M142 High Mobility Rocket Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) from the 623rd and a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft from the 167th. Missions like these are called HIMARS Rapid Infiltration missions and allow the HIMARS to offload from the aircraft, immediately employ its missile systems, then leave on the aircraft before the enemy can determine its location. But did you also know:

🏗 One U.S. Army HIMARS vehicle weighs approximately 35,800lbs loaded.

🛩 The C-17’s maximum payload is 170,900lbs, allowing it to transport multiple HIMARS vehicles at once.

🚀 The HIMARS can carry one launch pod containing either 6 guided missiles or 1 Army Tactical Missile System missile.

🎯 HIMARS missile systems can reach targets up to 300 kilometers away.

Camp Branch was a whirl of activity yesterday. It was a landing zone and a drop zone. It was a training ground for combat search and rescue and medical evacuation. More than 90 sorties have been flown so far during Sentry Storm 2021. The exercise wraps up today but we’ll be sharing more photos and video of this week’s events.

West Virginia Air National Guard exercise Sentry Storm 2021 is in full swing demonstrating combat capabilities in established and austere locations. Yesterday C-130 aircraft launched from 130th Airlift Wing for airdrop training and U.S. Navy HSC-9 helicopters with HSC-9 Tridents practiced sling load operations at Camp Branch with Kentucky National Guard. Meanwhile, a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System landed at Shepherd Field in Martinsburg in a C-17 Globemaster for a simulated rocket launch. We’ll be covering another busy day of Sentry Storm, so check back here for more images.

Business partners🤝

Aerial refueling is an integral part of C-17 Globemaster III aircrew training and we can’t do it without our KC-135 Stratotanker friends, like the 171st Air Refueling Wing. Any time of day, rain or shine, we’re happy to link up among the clouds☁️

Did you know❓
-The KC-135 flew its first mission in 1957🗓
-It transfers enough fuel through the refueling boom in one minute to operate the average family car for more than one year🚘
-A tanker transfers more fuel in 8 minutes than a gas station could pump in 24 hours⛽️
-The boom operator is approximately 20 feet from the cockpit of the aircraft being fueled📐

Teamwork makes the dream work! 🤜🤛

The 167th Airlift Wing, West Virginia National Guard hosted air transportation specialists from the 123rd Airlift Wing - Kentucky Air National Guard for a pre-deployment training last week. The training consisted of planning and palletizing cargo, multiple cargo loading exercises and joint inspection scenarios, all parts of the complete cargo transportation process the Airmen will experience in a deployed environment. The training also allowed 123rd Airmen to become more familiar with the C-17 Globemaster III aircraft at the 167th, an aircraft they will often work with on their upcoming deployment.

Ready to roll? Not without an aileron!

Aircraft maintainers with the 167th Maintenance Group repair an aileron from one of the wing’s C-17 Globemaster III aircraft in a hangar at the 167th Airlift Wing, Martinsburg, West Virginia. An aileron is a hinged flight control surface on each of the aircraft’s wings responsible for rolling movements, normally resulting in a change of flight path.

My deepest sympathies are extended to the 167th and their families. Our prayers are with you all. Thank you for your service.
Just a note to let you know the Air National Guard is appreciated for service to our country and communication networks which assist transmission of important data concerning the Corona Covid 19 pandemic. Also wanted to let you know my former home for many years, Kaipat (Saipan) in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is grateful for the support of the Air Guard and their assistance in the aftermath of three serious typhoons. My boyfriend US Army General Marcus Smith is on active duty, I am faithfully waiting for his return. We hope sometime later on to visit Saipan where I lived with my family, he has news from my friends on Saipan that he will be welcome. The storms have passed but presently we have been learning things are a little too sandy on Saipan in the wake of the disasters Imported glass for windows continue to be necessary for some structures, but the Guard and Air Force will be remembered for a long time, Kathryn Stewart McDonald ( formerly known as Mrs. Kathryn Coluzzi)
Nice job today with the C-17 flyover. I got to see the aircraft over Morgantown. Makes a USAF veteran aircraft mechanic very proud. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
As a nurse at UPMC Western Maryland I would like to say a heartfelt thank you for the awesome show of support today with the fly-over at our facility. It was a proud moment for me both as a healthcare worker and as an American! ❤️💙
Thank you so much for the flyover. Although I was not able to see it, I saw many positive posts on FB.
Posting from Cumberland MD....you bought so much joy, hope and happiness to so many...hugs and kisses
Did not see your aircraft in the sky, Did not hear your aircraft in the sky, did you do the Flyover?
All of these other states are doing flyovers to honor our first responders on the front lines. Are there any plans for the 130th and 167th to do this in WV?
WOW! Is that y'all target practicing at 6:30AM on a Saturdaty? Are you aware it's echoing across the valley, and literally woke me up? If not you, my apologies, but if it is, respectfully, how about a little neighborly consideration? Thank you for your service!
I want to wish all my Brothers and Sisters at the 167th Air National Guard a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year be safe
I just want to give a shout out to who ever you are that works at the Air Guard and was so kind of you to bring us a new american flag! We were just talking about having to get a new one after the first of the year. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the new flag. My the Lord bless you many many times for your thoughtful act of kindness
