West Virginia Guardsmen support first responders after Washington shooting.

What began as a routine shift change quickly became an emergency response.

On July 29, West Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to Joint Task Force-District of Columbia responded after a civilian alerted them that two people had been shot near N Street and Fifth Street NW in Washington, D.C.

Sgt. John-David Delaney and Sgt. Thomas Jurkovitz immediately led their teams to the scene, where they assessed the victims, prepared lifesaving medical equipment, and assisted until emergency medical personnel arrived moments later. The Soldiers then shifted their focus to securing the area and helping manage the scene so first responders could provide care.

Their quick actions, professionalism, and commitment to serving others reflect the values that define the West Virginia National Guard.

Two 167th pilots, Lt. Col. Ryan Healy and Major Trebor Taylor, had the opportunity to interact with Korean War veteran, Mr. Thomas Warden, exchanging stories and reinforcing the bond that connects generations of military aviators.

Taylor said Mr. Thomas lit up when he recalled certain memories. These conversations strengthen a shared legacy and remind us why we serve.
