Thrive: We Are Building a Brotherhood

The moment someone steps through the door at the Good Samaritan Outreach (Thrive Program), we immediately have common ground that makes our situation relatable. We all came in with nothing and are taking the necessary steps to rebuild our lives. We all come from different backgrounds, but we meet in the middle here. This program is small in size, but large in character. Some real-life lessons sweep through this program. There is never a moment that we are not learning: together. We are all battling our own demons and have no choice but to witness each other fighting, while doing our best to help when we can. Brotherhood doesn't mean being there only when things are easy going, it means being there when the going gets tuff and choosing to stand guard with the ones close to you no matter what.

This Tuesday at Thrive; Situational Awareness

This subject when put to use can save recovering addicts a lot of trouble. Being aware of your surroundings can help us avoid situations that do not serve our purpose. Situational awareness not only watches for external temptation, but also internal. Knowing what's going on internally can turn into a lifesaving compass. Once we know what's good for us and what's bad for us, it redirects our path. Situational awareness helps us to understand our triggers and how to navigate through those hard times when we feel weak. We don't walk around as if we aren't one choice away from setting our life back 10 years. We are well aware that all it takes is one bad decision. Being aware of that, constantly, is a recovering addict's superpower. We step in and face it head on instead of being oblivious and acting as if it's not there.

Monday's Mindset; The Cycle is Broken

One thing I want the guests that come into our program to know is that the decision to change has already been made. If a man comes into this program because he is truly tired of the way he's been living, then he needs to accept that as his first victory. I see a lot of men come into these programs with their mind made up. They feel like they aren't where they want to be " yet", and until they get there, they don't see the small steps as victory. Sometimes small steps are necessary, and until we see them for what they are; victory, we might not ever get where we want to be. We have to learn how to appreciate the small steps in order to appreciate the big steps. When we don't learn to appreciate the small steps, we start leaning on old coping mechanisms that make us feel like our effort is worth it. Those coping mechanisms do not last long so do yourself a favor and give yourself a pat on the back. Be proud of yourself, even in small matters.

A Heartfelt Thank You to the McAlester Public Library!
We are incredibly grateful to the McAlester Public Library for their generous donation of shelving units to our thrift store. This thoughtful contribution has allowed us to completely revitalize our space, creating a more organized and welcoming shopping experience for our community.
Since installing the new shelves, we have received a steady stream of compliments from our customers regarding our fresh, updated look. This transformation does more than just improve our aesthetic—it helps us display our inventory more effectively, which directly supports our mission.
As a reminder, every purchase made at our thrift store funds our program, which allows individuals to stay at our facility and rebuild their lives completely free of charge.
Partnerships like this underscore the strength of the McAlester community. Thank you, McAlester Public Library, for investing in our vision and helping us better serve our residents and shoppers alike!

"Did you know that one of the biggest hurdles to securing employment or housing is simply not having a physical ID? Without an official address, replacing lost documents can feel impossible. Our outreach program works directly with individuals to navigate this process, breaking down barriers to stability one step at a time. Guys come into our program with NO documents at all, starting from ground zero. This can feel like a dead end for people who are used to getting what they want right at the moment they want it. To all of the prayer warriors, we need you to pray that our brothers who are in the program stick around long enough to start reaping the benefits. I've seen guys come in and hit the ground running and then leave right before their documents come in. We need you to pray that our guys don't leave the nest to early."

Let's start this Monday right! To all of the early birds in McAlester, we hope all of you have a good day and a prosperous week. Today we want to notice someone who wanted to remain anonymous. This person came into our program with the hope to get his life on track. He stayed in the fight and now he is moving on to the next season in his life. He has learned how to and decided to take responsibility for his life. He is one step closer to complete independence. He has one more step to take before he is completely done with our program. Off to the transition house he goes. We know he will do well.

We are incredibly proud to recognize Lawrence Underhill and Joseph for their dedication to pursuing higher education. Lawrence has chosen to advance his skills in business and computer engineering, while Joseph is focusing his studies on game design.
Balancing academic pursuits with full-time employment requires immense discipline, and we deeply admire their commitment to personal and professional growth. We are fortunate to have a strong, driven team, and we look forward to supporting more of our team members as they achieve similar milestones in the future.
