On this grand and august National Cellophane Tape day I present you with way more than you ever wanted to know about 'Scotch' Tape.

It was originally invented in 1930 by Richard Drew, and, was a combination of cellophane, which was used to packaging food in grocery stores and an adhesive. It didn't get to a wicked great start though. The adhesive made one side darker than the other (so, it was not yet the 'invisible' part of invisible tape), and the machines that made the tape were still very uneven, so, sometimes... the tape wouldn't stick... And then there was the fact that no one had come up with a dispenser for it yet. Just imagine, trying to find the end of a tape that is nearly invisible. Thank heavens for John A. Borden and his 'snail' dispenser.

One last Did You Know tonight. Did you know that here at the library we don't actually use cellophane or magic tape on books. It looks sort of like the tape that everyone has at home, but, it's actually a special book tape we have. So, please, if something ever happens to a book while it's in your care, simply bring it back, tell us, and we'll give it our best shot putting it back together!
