Last week, our team talked to hundreds of Wisconsinites about our state parks. Our parks are underfunded and our leaders should take action.

Our parks are in danger of falling apart with crumbling and outdated infrastructure across the system. Sewers are cracking, roads are collapsing, trails are not maintained and the parks are understaffed.

Wisconsin used to fund our parks with tax dollars but that ended in 2015. While private donations, grants and other programs have provided some funding, the parks have been underfunded for the past 11 years. And, now the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has expired.

We're asking our state leaders to reauthorize Knowles-Nelson and create a permanent funding source for the future.

Our state parks are where we go to hike and fish, and where wildlife finds refuge. But after years of underfunding, they are falling apart – sewers are cracking, roads are collapsing and the parks are understaffed. With 20 million visitors each year, we’re loving our parks to death.

To make matters worse, the legislature just let an important conservation fund, the Knowles-Nelson Fund, expire.

Wisconsin Environment is urging state leaders to prioritize parks funding when they come back in 2027.

1 million acres of the boreal forest are chopped down every year. Tell Costco: Don’t sell toilet paper made from critical habitat in the boreal forest.

The vast boreal forest is too special to be torn down and flushed away.
