Missoula Urban Demonstration Project (MUD) MUD empowers people to build a more sustainable community through tool sharing and hands-on learning.

MUD started in 1981 as a way for neighbors to help each other out and learn some new skills along the way. Fast forward through massive expansion of the tool library, moving to a more central location out of some well loved houses and lots of love, hard work and dedication, that's when we reach today. Today we still have a passion for community building and sustainable living but we look a little more industrial. Our upcycled shipping containers welcome members to an inventory of over 2,000 tools with which they can complete their projects. Plus we are conveniently located next to Home Resource for any additional supplies that you might need.

Did you know some of tools have use fees? Yes, a majority of our tools are free to loan out as a member, but some require blade sharpening or fuel, like our gas lawn mowers. Don’t worry, you can always butter up Christian to get a sweet deal (maybe don’t though, we don’t want his head getting too big)!!💸💸

Do you want to feel empowered when using saws, drills, brad nailers and more? Then the Women-Led Carpentry Workshop is for you! Participants will gain an overview of a variety of carpentry tools and the proper methods to safely use them. Put these new skills to work on Day 2 as we build our own projects with the guidance of MUD Staff and Volunteers! This workshop is designed to be welcoming and inclusive to all individuals, regardless of previous knowledge, skills, or gender identity.

The air is crisp, apples are on our trees, and the Garden Party has come and gone. Certainly feels like fall is here! But fear not; we have the perfect workshops to start the equinox off right. 🍂

🍻A Highlander Pint Night paired with a Spoon Carving Workshop (sold out, sorry! There will still be plenty of Highlander beer and pizza.) on the 22nd to begin. We follow that with a Cob Wall Workshop that will teach you how to build with materials from the earth, while getting your hands and feet dirty - I'm serious. This is a three-day workshop on the 26th, 27th, & 28th, and will result in MUD having a beautiful landscape feature on our property.

🍎 Plus, our cider presses are done hibernating and are ready for your apples, MUD members!

🔨 We're having a tool sale during Tool Library hours on October 3rd, so get ready. Feel free to check out our upcoming October workshops on Square while you're signing up for the Cob Wall Workshop. You really don't want to miss it; it's going to be AWESOME!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our Garden Party last night! The dinner and music by Elephant Gerald Trio with Whitni Kent was fantastic, the silent auctions were a hit, and we had the most cinematic Chicken Poo Bingo ever. What a beautiful night to celebrate another year of MUD and our members🌅

Thanks to all of our volunteers, board members, and Tool Library members that keep our mission going. We love being a resource for Missoulians and will continue to be one for years to come, and we couldn’t do that without you all❤️❤️

Thanks to all the local businesses and organizations that supported this event, your support means the world.

There’s still plenty of MUD events going on this month. We’ll be tabling at Sunday Streets and ClimateFest, AND we have Spoon Carving and Cob Wall Workshops coming up. Not to mention our big tool sale next month (details to come). For now, we just celebrate another successful year🎉🎉!!!
