The kora is a 21 stringed West African harp and is traditionally played by oral historians known as Griots. Many songs featured on the kora preserve an 800 year history dating back to the founding of the Mande empire.

And now, this beautiful instrument has made its way to Monticello with Sean Gaskell! He studied under the extensive instruction of Moriba Kuyateh and the late Malamini Jobarteh in Gambia, and both Youssoupha Cissokho and Mamadou Cissokho in Senegal. Gaskell has presented adult, youth, and family programs at over 400 libraries and a multitude of k-12 schools, colleges, universities and assisted living facilities throughout the United States and Canada. Ever wanted to try Mario Kart in real life?! Time to get in the drivers seat!

Join us September 2nd at 3 PM in the Children's Program Room for our Mario Kart Championship!

Begin in the Children's Program room to design your kart. Remember! You will have to hold your car in you arms while racing around the track! Be aware that there will be pitfalls galore! For example, if a banana hits you, you have to spin around 3 times and count to 10 before going again, or if a Bomb hits you, have to count to 10 before you can go again, and a star will make you invincible for one lap! It will be loads of silly fun! Plus snacks to refuel your engines!
