Tropical Storm Bertha continues to move towards the Louisiana coast. While the threat of widespread heavy rainfall has decreased, dangerous heat, gusty winds and isolated power outages remain concerns today.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the New Orleans area from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with feels-like temperatures up to 118°F.

Please:
Stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity.
Secure loose outdoor items.
Help spread the word about the Rosenwald shelter to those who are in need.
Eliminate standing water around your home to reduce mosquito breeding. West Nile virus has been detected in local mosquito populations.

The City of New Orleans is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Bertha as it approaches southeast Louisiana. The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Metropolitan New Orleans, and the City's Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) has activated to a Level II (24/7 Monitoring) to coordinate preparedness efforts and support citywide response operations.

According to the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to move near or along the southeast Louisiana coast between late Tuesday night and Wednesday. Tropical storm conditions, including sustained winds or frequent gusts between 39 and 57 mph, are possible across Metropolitan New Orleans beginning as early as late Tuesday night, with the greatest potential for impacts occurring Wednesday.

In addition to gusty winds, Bertha is expected to bring up to 2 to 4 inches of rainfall, with isolated totals up to 6 inches through Thursday. Heavy rainfall may result in localized street flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Heavy rainfall remains the primary concern with Tropical Depression Two, but wind gusts of 40 mph or greater are also possible later this week.

Gusty winds could begin as early as late Tuesday night, with the greatest potential for impacts Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening.

Now is the time to complete preparations:
• Secure loose outdoor items that could become airborne.
• Charge phones and other essential devices in case of isolated power outages.
• Stay informed by monitoring official updates and signing up for NOLA Ready emergency alerts.

Tropical Depression Two is forecast to affect the northern Gulf coast midweek.

This system could bring heavy rainfall for New Orleans of about 3-5 inches with locally higher amounts possible.

Wind gusts of 40 mph plus are possible and could cause isolated damage, some downed tree limbs and potential power outages.

Use sandbags correctly with these safety tips:
- Place sandbags outside doors, garages and other low openings - this creates a barrier to help keep floodwater out.
- Fill bags up to two-thirds full - overfilling bags don't seal well and are harder to shape.
- Place plastic sheeting between your home and the sandbags for added protection - use a tarp or sheeting to help reduce seepage and improve the barrier.
