The New Orleans City Council is the legislative branch of New Orleans city government. The Council considers and enacts all local laws that govern the City of New Orleans. The Council also approves the operating and capital budgets for the City, as recommended by the mayor, and continually monitors revenues and expenditures for local government operations. The City Council is also the regulatory body for public utilities. It also reviews and has final say on many land use and zoning matters, as well as considers major economic development projects for the City. As a Board of Review for Orleans Parish, the Council examines appeals of property tax assessments for real estate taxes, and certifies tax rolls to the Louisiana Tax Commission. Other responsibilities of the Council include overseeing the operation of the public access television in Orleans Parish.

Today, the Council honored the life and legacy of civil rights icon Jerome “Big Duck” Smith with measures recognizing his decades of service to New Orleans.

The Council moved to rename the Tremé Recreation Community Center as the Jerome “Big Duck” Smith Tremé Recreation Community Center, ensuring his legacy remains rooted in the community he served.

The Council also declared Friday, May 21, 2027, as “Jerome ‘Big Duck’ Smith Day” in the City of New Orleans, recognizing his work as a Freedom Rider, civil rights activist, community organizer, mentor, educator and lifelong champion for New Orleans children, culture and justice.

His courage, service and commitment to the people of New Orleans will continue to inspire generations to come.

A fresh start for the Joe W. Brown Victory Track!

Today, Councilmember Councilman Hughes joined NORD Commission and community partners to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the newly resurfaced track at Joe W. Brown Memorial Park.

The improvements provide a refreshed space for NORD athletes, local schools, neighborhood runners, walkers and community members to stay active and enjoy for years to come.

Another investment in recreation, wellness and quality of life for New Orleans residents.

Today, Councilmembers joined faith, labor and civic leaders with Together New Orleans at City Hall to mark five years since Hurricane Ida and remember the lives lost due to prolonged power outages following the storm.

The event also focused on how New Orleans can strengthen its energy resilience, including a proposed $28 million Neighborhood Power Plan, which would expand distributed energy resources and help better protect residents during future outages.
