The New Orleans City Council is the legislative branch of New Orleans city government. The Council considers and enacts all local laws that govern the City of New Orleans. The Council also approves the operating and capital budgets for the City, as recommended by the mayor, and continually monitors revenues and expenditures for local government operations. The City Council is also the regulatory b

ody for public utilities. It also reviews and has final say on many land use and zoning matters, as well as considers major economic development projects for the City. As a Board of Review for Orleans Parish, the Council examines appeals of property tax assessments for real estate taxes, and certifies tax rolls to the Louisiana Tax Commission. Other responsibilities of the Council include overseeing the operation of the public access television in Orleans Parish.

Today, Councilmembers JP Morrell, Matthew Willard , Freddie King III, and Eugene J. Green Jr. joined Mayor Helena Moreno for the announcement of the Mayor’s Canal Street Renaissance Initiative Executive Order.

The initiative brings city agencies together to strengthen Canal Street through investments in public safety, infrastructure, economic development, cleanliness, and cultural revitalization.

It also represents a collaborative commitment to strengthening one of New Orleans’ most historic and recognizable corridors.

Investing in young leaders means investing in the future of New Orleans.

On Saturday, girls ages 10–18 came together for Level Up, a day focused on leadership, confidence, and personal growth.

Hosted by Councilmembers Lesli Harris and Aimee McCarron, the event featured inspiring speakers, engaging activities, and valuable resources designed to empower young women to build confidence, strengthen their leadership skills, and connect with their peers.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this year’s Level Up a success.
