At the Bushwick Collective, five Taiwanese graffiti artists
gathered with audiences and international artists
to share their creative journeys
and the story of how graffiti culture in Taiwan got to where it is today.

For them, graffiti isn't just a form of making.
It's a way of having a conversation with the city.

At the talk, the artists shared their perspectives on their own work and exchanged ideas about street art with people coming from completely different backgrounds and practices.

The exchange didn't only happen on the walls.
It happened in every conversation.

The wave keeps going.

🎂 TCCNY 35th Anniversary🎉

A romance that only New York could have written.❤️💙🧡💜💛💚

We threw these at pianist Chun-Chieh Yen, one by one.

No long pauses. No explanations.

He just sat down at the piano and played his answer.🎹

Some of it lives in the melody.🎵
Some in the harmony.🎵
Some in the space between the notes the kind that makes an image appear
before you even realize it. 🎼

What would you play?
Drop your answer in the comments.

We'll be revealing what Chun-Chieh Yen actually played one by one, in the comments.

Black Zao tells Taiwanese stories
through the language of graffiti.

The visual identity of Taiwan POP was designed by Black Zao.

He grew up surrounded by folk belief, Buddhism, and Taoist culture.
His great-uncle was a Buddhist painting master.
His manny painted sets for glove puppet theater stages.

Calligraphy, natural imagery, symbols of belief,
and the fluorescent palette of glove puppet theater —
a shared visual memory that many Taiwanese people carry.

For Black Zao, written language isn't just something to be read.
It's energy.

His work spans city walls and album covers,
collaborating with Fire EX and Flesh Juicer,
translating music into visual language.
In 2019, he received the Independent Music Awards'
Best Album Package Design.

This summer, he joined five Taiwanese graffiti artists
in the Bushwick Collective mural project,
leaving his mark on one of New York's most iconic
street art neighborhoods.

Those colors from Taiwan will stay on the walls of Bushwick
for the next year.

A Symphony of Island and Literature: 2026 Workshop for Translating Taiwan Literature
Calling all emerging translators —Apply Now!

Following the success of the 2025 Workshop for Translating Taiwan Literature in Taiwan, (National Museum of Taiwan Literature) and (British Centre for Literary Translation) have partnered once again for “ : 2026 Workshop for Translating Taiwan Literature” as one of the major events in this year’s Taiwan Writers Festival. The in-person workshop will be mentored by the internationally acclaimed translator, Jeremy Tiang, and senior editor, Dennis Zhou, joined by Taiwanese writers, experienced literary translators, scholars, and publishing industry representatives from Finland, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom, and other countries.

We are convinced that nurturing and supporting translators demands long-term investment and commitment, so we’re running another workshop in 2026. We aim to create a steady, immersive environment for translators to gain experience and grow together through open dialogue and hands-on literary translation practice. Our goal is to help translators find their unique voice and develop their ability to interpret culture across languages.

We cordially invite translators with a passion for literary translation to take part in this grand literary event!

TAIWAN POP | TCCNY 35 - Series 03

this week
TAIWAN all over the WALLS🔥🔥🔥

Six Taiwanese artists —
COLASA, Mr. OGAY, VASTAR, ALLO, Candy Kuo, and Black Zao, are leaving their traces on the streets of the Bushwick Collective.

Cans of spray paint.🎨
Scissor lifts parked against the walls.
Shoulders held up for hours.💪🦾
Fingers covered in color.🤟

These artists are putting their work on the walls of Brooklyn, leaving something that belongs to this summer.🔥🔥🔥

⚡️COLASA
Uses graffiti to challenge the boundaries of traditional art,
throwing the colors inside him directly into the city.

⚡️Mr. OGAY
Responds to social absurdity through bare-figured characters and dark humor, using "ugly" to reopen a conversation about what's real.

⚡️VASTAR
Combines old American comic style with salvaged materials, building something heavy and dimensional on the street.

⚡️ALLO
Paints female portraits with clean, decisive spray-paint lines, youth, city feeling, and emotion all left on the wall together.

⚡️Candy Kuo
Depicts the relationships between nature, women, and environment in careful realism, drawing from both East Asian aesthetics and an American Southwest upbringing.

⚡️Black Zao
weaves calligraphy, natural imagery, and the gold-neon tones of Taiwanese glove puppetry into graffiti, forming a visual language that's unmistakably his.

On May 28,
they'll join Brooklyn Street Art's Jaime Rojo and artist Steven Harrington for a conversation at Lot 45.

Bushwick

Mr. OGAY、COLASA、VASTAR、ALLO、Candy Kuo、Black Zao,

COLASA

Mr. OGAY

VASTAR

ALLO

Candy Kuo

Black Zao
