Through our We Rise program, young people on probation gain hands-on experience and learn new skills by working with horses.

From horseback riding and horse care to ranch work and learning about careers in veterinary medicine and animal care, participants can learn by doing and explore new interests.

Thank you to Apple Creek Farms and Haystack Horses for helping make this experience possible. Partnerships like these give young people the chance to build skills, try something new, and learn about possible career paths.

Alameda County families now have a new youth diversion option.

The Alameda County Probation Department has launched Indaba, part of the Ubuntu Justice Initiative, in partnership with Brotherhood of Elders Network (BOEN) and Positive Communication Practices (P*P). This culturally rooted approach centers accountability, healing, and community support.

Indaba is designed for young people involved in lower-level offenses, bringing families, community partners, and mentors into a process that addresses harm while working to prevent deeper involvement in the justice system.

Parents and caregivers interested in learning more about Indaba can contact ACPD for information about the program and whether it may be an option for their family.

A trail can ask a lot of you, and that is part of the point.

Through Together We Climb, Camp Sweeney staff recently hiked with young people through Peña Adobe Regional Park.

The changing terrain gave staff a chance to reinforce a simple message: when things get difficult, use your resources, lean on the people around you, and keep working toward the same goal.

Teachers, probation staff, supervisors, and peers encouraged one another along the way.

The hike was more than time outdoors. It was a chance to practice teamwork, persistence, and to cross the finish line.

Our Reentry Vendor Coffee Chat series brings community partners and service providers together to share what they’re seeing, learn from one another, and strengthen coordination around reentry services in Alameda County.

These conversations help build stronger connections among the people and organizations supporting individuals as they return to the community after incarceration.

A forklift certification can be more than a credential when it leads to what comes next.
Our clients recently completed a three-week forklift certification program through Tri-Valley Career Center, along with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety training and hands-on career coaching.

One client started work at a Fremont warehouse just two days after completing the program. Another is now enrolled in a fully funded bachelor’s degree program through UC Berkeley Extension.

The training also focused on what it takes to stay employed: showing up on time, being consistent and building confidence in the workplace.

We’re grateful to Tri-Valley Career Center for partnering with us to connect our clients with practical skills and opportunities they can build on.

The 9th Annual We Run Oakland brought the community together for an important purpose: raising awareness of human trafficking.

Hosted by A Sista’s Touch in collaboration with Dope Only and other community organizations, the event used movement and community connection to draw greater attention to an issue affecting people and families across our communities.

Thank you to everyone who came out to walk, run, volunteer, and support the event.

We went to APPA to learn from the field and to contribute to it.

At this year’s American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) Training Institute, ACPD staff spent time learning from colleagues across the profession. Eight of our staff also served as faculty across five sessions, sharing practices and perspectives from work happening here at ACPD.

Just as meaningful was seeing our staff show up for one another — sitting in on colleagues’ sessions, offering support and learning together along the way.

That balance of learning, sharing, and supporting each other is the kind of professional growth we want to keep building.

Growth happens before the title changes.

At our recent Promotional & Swearing-In Ceremony, 12 Alameda County Probation Department employees stepped into new roles across the Department: four Unit Supervisors, two Institutional Supervisor I, two Institutional Supervisor II, two Division Directors, one Superintendent, and one Supervisor of Professional Standards.

Each honoree took the oath of office and received an updated badge marking the responsibilities of their new role. Chief Ford closed the ceremony with remarks to the honorees and their guests.

At ACPD, we believe in creating opportunities for employees to build their skills, deepen their experience, and prepare for greater responsibility while remaining committed to the work and the people we serve.

Congratulations to our 12 leaders. May you keep learning, keep growing, and carry forward the integrity and commitment that brought you to this moment.

More than 30 young people gathered to celebrate a new mural and basketball court with the OK Program — and the smiles, energy, and sense of belonging said a lot about why this work matters.

The Alameda County Probation Department is proud to partner with the OK Program, including through one of our Deputy Probation Officers who serves as an officer with the program.

The OK Program creates space for Black boys to build relationships, express themselves, stay active, and connect with adults who believe in their potential. That work matters to us because prevention is part of our mission. Supporting young people before they become more deeply involved in the justice system strengthens families and communities.

We were proud to join the OK Program and its community partners for the unveiling of its new mural and Golden State Warriors-sponsored basketball court — and even prouder to be connected to the work happening there every day.

Summer Summit wrapped up with something worth celebrating: young people completing a summer of growth, hard work, and new experiences.

At our Summer Summit Sendoff, we recognized this year’s participants and the people who supported them along the way.

Congratulations to every young person who took part, and thank you to the parents, families, probation officers, staff, and community partners who presented, participated, and helped create meaningful opportunities throughout the program.

Programs like Summer Summit give young people space to build skills, strengthen connections, and keep moving toward their goals.
