On September 10, an incident at Temescal Pool exposed swimmers in the pool to chemical changes in the water during a privately-hosted swim program. A number of swimmers reported coughing with breathing difficulty. We are deeply sorry to the swimmers who were affected by this incident. Individuals who use a City pool expect and deserve a safe environment. Temescal Pool has been temporarily closed, and the City is conducting an investigation and implementing operational changes necessary to help prevent a similar incident from occurring again.

Additional mandatory training for City staff will be conducted prior to the pool being reopened. This retraining instructs that no changes to the circulation system or chemical controllers will be made while the swimming pool is in active use. We are working with the private swim program operators to reach out to all individuals who were participating in pool activities on the day of this incident to ensure they receive appropriate information and follow-up.

Temescal Pool remains closed pending the completion of scheduled pool equipment maintenance. The City will provide an additional update within one week from today.

Oakland Assistant City Administrator Chuck Baker joined the Oakland Chamber of Commerce to discuss the systems that shape how businesses experience City government, including contracts and procurement reform, prompt payment, customer relationship management, and the City's AI working group.

"Oakland has the opportunity to make it easier to invest here, easier to do business with the City, and easier for businesses and residents to navigate City government," Baker told the group.

Swimmers are a valued part of the Oakland Parks, Recreation and Youth Development community and the City takes their health and safety seriously. The City is investigating the incident at Temescal Pool to understand what exactly occurred, to review our policies and training, and to make sure an incident like this never happens again. In the meantime, staff are attempting to contact the individuals who were injured to make sure we are offering whatever support we can.
