This morning, Mayor Sheng Thao and City leaders hosted Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on a special tour of DeFremery Recreation Center. The delegation learned about the role the DeFremery mansion played during the civil rights movement, the legacy of the Black Panther Party at DeFremery park, and the Center’s current program activities. The Prime Minister got a chance to meet with our amazing Recreation Center staff and representatives from the Black Cowboys, the Huey P. Newton Foundation, the Panther Skate Plaza and more!

DeFremery Park is named after the Dutch DeFremery family who emigrated to the Bay Area in the mid-1800s. James DeFremery built the house that is now the Recreation Center in the 1860s and he lived here with his wife, Virginie, who was formerly enslaved. At a time when in*******al marriages were illegal in much of the nation, they built a home and a family here in Oakland.

This site later became a base for Black soldiers during World War II and a meeting place of the Black Panther Party. Today the DeFremery Recreation Center is a place of joy, celebration and love for Oakland families.

Thank you for your visit to Oakland, Prime Minister Rutte!

Are you a West Oakland resident? We've got updates on the 7th Street Connection Project! First, the 7th Street Walk & Talk (Part 2) has been rescheduled for December 2nd, since rain is expected this Saturday.

Next, we've created a virtual open house for the 7th Street Connection Project. A virtual open house allows for someone to access and respond to project information on their own time. It is another way that we are seeking input from people who live, work, and visit in the area. We understand that this form of engagement may not reach everyone so we are also hosting in-person events and will be visiting neighbors and businesses on 7th Street and around West Oakland.

Finally, our survey is still open! All information can be found on our webpage at https://hubs.la/Q029bY4Y0.

Dear Oakland community,

The City of Oakland wishes you all a loving, safe, and joyful Veterans Day this year. Our wonderful town is home to more than 11,000 veterans according to the latest U.S. Census figures. We at the City celebrate the holiday this year as an opportunity to honor and recognize each and every one of them. Veterans are a model to us all. For many of our own local leaders who are veterans themselves, their experience in military service has guided their values and commitment to serve at home in their community. Inspired by their example, we at the City dedicate ourselves to aspire to excellence in all we do – and to always place service above self.

We encourage everyone in Oakland to take the opportunity this year to thank a veteran for their service, and to take a moment to reflect on all that our veterans have strived for, sacrificed, and worked to provide. Finally, we take this moment to reaffirm, in their honor, our commitment to you – to the service we strive every day to provide for the betterment of our community.

In thanks, service, and love,
The City of Oakland
