Save the date for our annual Open House and Pass the Paddle Ceremony!

Tour our East Machias facility, meet DSF staff and Board members, and explore the projects making a difference across Downeast Maine. From river restoration and endangered Atlantic salmon recovery to land conservation and fisheries research, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with our team and discover how our work is helping shape the future of Maine’s rivers.

Families are encouraged to attend and enjoy hands-on activities for kids, along with smoked fish, hot dogs, and ice cream.

We’re excited to welcome author Catherine Schmitt, who will present about her acclaimed book, The President’s Salmon, sharing the remarkable history of Atlantic salmon and their enduring connection to Maine’s rivers.

Pass the Paddle Ceremony
The event also features our annual Pass the Paddle Ceremony, a special tradition honoring an individual whose leadership, dedication, and stewardship embody Downeast Salmon Federation’s mission. This year’s recipient will be announced soon!

Well looky here!!!! Another well-deserved accolade for Bailey!

We’re excited to announce that this year’s recipient of DSF’s annual Pass the Paddle Award is Bailey Bowden!

Bailey has been a dedicated leader in restoring fish passage and reconnecting Maine’s rivers, with a particular focus on alewife restoration throughout the Bagaduce River watershed. His commitment to healthy rivers, thriving fisheries, and the return of sea-run fish embodies the leadership, dedication, and stewardship that the Pass the Paddle tradition celebrates.

Please join us in recognizing Bailey at DSF’s annual Open House & Pass the Paddle Ceremony on Wednesday, September 23, from 3:00–6:00 p.m. at our East Machias facility.

Along with the Pass the Paddle Ceremony, enjoy facility tours, hands-on activities for kids, smoked fish, hot dogs, and ice cream. We’ll also welcome author Catherine Schmitt for a special presentation on her acclaimed book, The President’s Salmon, exploring the remarkable history of Atlantic salmon and their enduring connection to Maine’s rivers.

The Toddy Pond Watershed Management District Meetings will be occurring every two weeks starting on Tuesday, Sept. 8th at 6:00pm at the Orland Fire Department.

Just got a report from the fire department that fire is not completely out yet and there may still be a bit of smoke but they are working on it. The crews will be working in the area tomorrow as well so it may be advised to avoid that area.

CASTINE, Maine (WABI) - A wildland fire has shut down a road in Castine.

Castine Road between the intersection of Shore Road, on the Penobscot end, and Dunbar Road is closed, according to the Castine Fire Rescue Department.
