The Perry Village Police Department handled 81 calls for service last week. Officers conducted 11 traffic stops, resulting in six citations. I am also pleased to report that no parking violations were noted.

Over the weekend, one of our night-shift officers assisted the Madison Township Police Department with an assault call.

One officer attended two days of specialized training, and all officers completed their annual fi****ms qualifications. The qualifications required officers to demonstrate proficiency and accuracy with their duty handguns, shotguns, patrol rifles, and off-duty fi****ms.

Congratulations to Officer John “Jake” Jacobson for earning this year’s Top Gun recognition. All our officers performed well, but Officer Jacobson achieved the highest overall performance across multiple firearm platforms, including his off-duty fi****ms. Great job, Jake!

School Resource Officer Malcolm Battiato has prepared a PowerPoint presentation regarding the laws governing electric bicycles. Please watch for information about an upcoming meeting where this important presentation will be shared with parents.

Finally, I want to wish our Perry Pirates varsity football team the best of luck as they take on Kirtland this Friday! A boosters’ tailgate will be held before the game, and I look forward to seeing our residents come out and support the team.

🚔 FROM THE CHIEF’S DESK 🚔

What a great week we had as our students returned to school! During the past week, the Perry Village Police Department handled 69 calls for service. Officers conducted six traffic stops, resulting in two citations.

One traffic crash occurred in a school parking lot involving four vehicles. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Please use caution and remain attentive while driving through school parking lots to help prevent collisions.

Our officers also joined the community at Thursday evening’s bonfire. We enjoyed the opportunity to speak with so many students, families, and community members.

As I mentioned last week, Village Council approved the purchase of four automated external defibrillators (AEDs), which will be placed in our patrol vehicles. All of our officers are trained in first aid, CPR, and the administration of Narcan. We are scheduling refresher training with the Perry Joint Fire District, which will include the proper use of AEDs and Narcan.

We have now completed the first week of school. Each day, officers were present to greet our students and monitor traffic. Officers also conducted enforcement details for violations involving school buses loading and unloading students. Thankfully, no violations were observed last week.

As I have stated before, the safety of our students remains a priority for the Perry Village Police Department. We will continue strict enforcement of school-related traffic violations.

I would like to close with a reminder regarding electric bicycles. Anyone operating an electric bicycle on a roadway must follow the same traffic laws as other vehicles. This includes stopping at stop signs and yielding to other traffic when required. I have attached a flyer outlining several important e-bike safety rules.

Please also remember that electric and motorized minibikes without functioning foot pedals are not permitted on public roadways. These vehicles are designed and approved for off-road use only.

Good afternoon, Perry Village!

During the past week, the Perry Village Police Department handled 81 calls for service. Officers conducted 15 traffic stops, resulting in eight citations, and issued four parking citations.

We continue to periodically patrol the Village’s residential developments in addition to our main roadways. If you see us, please stop and say hello. We are always happy to speak with our residents and hear your thoughts or concerns. You may also call me at any time. If I am out of the office, please leave a message, and I will return your call.

During last week’s Village Council meeting, Council approved funding for the purchase of four automated external defibrillators (AEDs). These lifesaving units will be placed in our patrol cruisers for officers to use when responding to someone experiencing cardiac arrest and in need of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

The AEDs will be purchased using funds received through the nationwide fentanyl settlement. Therefore, this purchase will have no financial impact on the Village’s general fund.

Yesterday marked the beginning of the new school year. I would like to remind motorists to use extra caution when traveling near school buses and through school zones. Please allow additional travel time due to increased congestion around the schools, especially while Manchester Road remains closed.

The safety of our students is a priority for the Perry Village Police Department. Officers will strictly enforce school-related traffic laws. Please slow down, remain alert, and help us keep our students safe.

🖤 IN MEMORIAM: CHIEF MICHAEL “MIKE” SHANK 🖤

The Perry Village Police Department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of retired Chief of Police Michael “Mike” Shank.

Chief Shank joined the Perry Village Police Department in 1990 as a part-time patrol officer. He was promoted to sergeant in 1995 and lieutenant in 2001.

While serving Perry Village, Mike also worked for the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority Police Department in Cleveland. In 1991, he was assigned to the Detective Bureau’s Vice and Narcotics Unit. From 1994 through 1998, he served with the Federal Drug Task Force. He was promoted to sergeant in the Narcotics Unit in 1998 and lieutenant in Basic Patrol in 2001. From 2004 through 2006, he served as patrol commander.

In 2006, Mike left CMHA to serve the Perry Village Police Department full time. He later served as Chief of Police from 2012 through 2014 before retiring in 2015.

During his career with Perry Village, Chief Shank helped establish our School Resource Officer guidelines in cooperation with the Perry Local Schools administration. He worked closely with the students and staff throughout the school campus and remained committed to building a safe and positive relationship between law enforcement and our schools.

Chief Shank also served as a field training officer and trained and mentored many of the officers who served alongside him. I had the privilege of beginning my law enforcement career with Mike. He trained me, guided me, and helped shape the officer and supervisor I would become. I will always be grateful for his leadership, friendship, and the lessons he shared.

Chief Shank will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched throughout his distinguished career.

Rest in peace, Chief Michael Shank. Your service, leadership, and legacy will never be forgotten.

The first day of school is Monday, August 17, 2026! A new school year means new routines, increased traffic, and students walking to and from school.

Please help keep our students safe:

🚌 Stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights.
👀 Watch carefully for children near roads and crosswalks.
📵 Avoid distractions while driving.
🚗 Allow extra time during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.

🚔 NEW PATROL UNIT READY FOR SERVICE 🚔

The Perry Village Police Department is pleased to announce that our new patrol unit, PV674, is fully equipped and ready to hit the road tonight with Sergeant M. Orf. The new Chevrolet Tahoe will serve as the primary patrol vehicle for our midnight shift, so residents may notice it around the Village.

Mayor Coss and Village Council graciously provided the funding to replace our 2017 Ford Explorer. Although the Explorer was originally scheduled for replacement next year, purchasing the new Tahoe this year is projected to save Village residents approximately $6,000.

We sincerely thank Mayor Coss and Village Council for their continued support of the Perry Village Police Department and their commitment to providing our officers with the equipment needed to serve and protect our community safely and effectively.

Good morning, Perry Village!

During the past week, the Perry Village Police Department handled 95 calls for service. Officers conducted 20 traffic stops, resulting in nine citations.

I have asked our officers to increase traffic enforcement within the Village’s residential developments. We have received several complaints from residents regarding motorists speeding and failing to stop at stop signs. As part of this focused enforcement effort, you may occasionally see officers monitoring traffic within these neighborhoods. Please slow down, obey all posted traffic signs, and help us keep our neighborhoods safe.

Also of note, Lieutenant Michael Collins assisted the Madison Township Police Department with a K-9 deployment involving a search for a male experiencing a mental health crisis. With the assistance of K-9 Pio, the male was safely located and transported to the hospital for treatment.

On Tuesday, several of our officers joined Mayor Coss and me at the annual National Night Out held at Veterans Park in Painesville. Law enforcement officers from throughout Lake County gathered with residents for an evening of community engagement, food, and prizes. During the event, attendees voted for their favorite police vehicles. We are proud to announce that the Perry Village Police Department received third place in the People’s Choice Award! 🏆🚓

Residents may also notice a new police vehicle around town. Mayor Coss and Village Council graciously provided funding to replace a 2017 Ford Explorer with a new Chevrolet Tahoe. Please allow extra travel time, as the areas surrounding the schools will experience increased traffic and congestion. Remain alert for students, school buses, and changing traffic patterns. This is especially important while the Manchester Road bridge remains closed.

🚔 National Night Out 2026 🚔

On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Chief Dan Shook, Sergeant Dale Homerick, Officer Malcolm Battiato, and Officer Matthew Moore proudly represented the Perry Village Police Department at the 2026 National Night Out alongside our law enforcement partners from police departments throughout Lake County and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

National Night Out is a wonderful opportunity for law enforcement and the community to come together, strengthen relationships, and build partnerships that help keep our neighborhoods safe.

We are also proud to announce that the Perry Village Police Department participated in the Police Car Showdown and earned 3rd Place! 🏆🚓 Congratulations to everyone who helped showcase our department!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to meet our officers, ask questions, and spend the evening with us. We also extend our appreciation to the event organizers for hosting another outstanding National Night Out. Opportunities like these allow us to connect with our community and continue building the trust and partnerships that make Perry Village such a great place to live.

As your new Chief of Police, I want to begin keeping our residents informed with a weekly update highlighting some of the activity within the Perry Village Police Department. While our monthly reports to Village Council provide a more detailed overview, these weekly posts will offer a quick look at what’s been happening in our community.

Weekly Highlights

📞 Officers responded to 98 calls for service.

🚓 Officers conducted 23 traffic stops, resulting in 9 traffic citations.

🚗 Officers issued 4 overnight parking citations.

🚔 One traffic stop resulted in an OVI (Operating a Vehicle Intoxicated) arrest. Due to the arrest, no traffic citation was issued during that stop.

Our department also enjoyed several opportunities to connect with the community this past week. On Tuesday, July 28, Lieutenant Michael Collins and I participated in the Lake County Fair Parade. On Saturday, August 1, Officer Malcolm Battiato, Lieutenant Michael Collins, and I had the pleasure of spending time with residents during the Perry Historical Society Annual Sale and the Perry Village Annual Street Sale. We always appreciate these opportunities to meet members of our community, answer questions, and thank everyone who stopped by to visit with us.

Overnight parking on any village street is prohibited and may result in a parking citation. Please help us keep our streets safe and accessible by parking vehicles off the roadway overnight.
