It's not too late! If you didn't change the batteries in your and alarms yesterday, you can still do it. While you're at it, check the manufacturing date on the back. Replace smoke alarms after 10 years and CO alarms after 5, 7, or 10 years depending on the model.

Joint First Responder Training

Petersham Fire Department hosted our second evening of first responder training, joined by our neighboring departments from New Salem Fire Department , Shutesbury, and Wendell.

Tonight’s training focused on essential patient care skills including taking vitals, airway management, wound management, patient immobilization using the Kendrick Extrication Device (KED), and CPR.

We appreciate the participation and collaboration from all departments involved. Continued joint training helps strengthen our teamwork and ensures we’re ready to provide the best possible care to those we serve.

Petersham Fire was proudly represented at the Massachusetts State Fire Academy in Springfield, where one of our firefighters is currently enrolled in an intensive Fire and Life Safety Educator Program.

Over the next several weeks, this program will provide advanced training in community education, fire prevention strategies, and data-driven risk assessment. Upon completion, our firefighter will be equipped to design and deliver effective public education programs, conduct community risk reduction assessments, develop fire safety outreach materials, and collaborate with schools, senior centers, and local organizations to reduce preventable emergencies.

This specialized training plays a vital role in helping our community stay safe — not just by responding to emergencies, but by working to prevent them before they happen.

Today, Petersham Fire proudly welcomed our neighboring departments from Wendell, New Salem Fire Department , and Shutesbury for a joint training session taught by Critical Knowledge, one of our valued training partners.

During this session, firefighters practiced a range of life-saving skills — from backboarding patients and treating traumatic injuries to gathering important medical history and improving overall patient care. Over the next several weeks, our departments will continue to train together, strengthening these critical skills through ongoing, hands-on practice.

These opportunities are vital — they allow firefighters to hone and strengthen the life-saving skills we rely on every day. Continuous training ensures that when an emergency happens, we’re ready to respond quickly, safely, and effectively.

At Petersham Fire, we’re committed to continually improving our skills and working closely with our mutual aid partners to keep all our communities safe.
