Another great Badges & Backpacks event with the Pima County Sheriff’s Office! It was great to see hundreds of families from across Southern Arizona connecting with local organizations and getting the backpacks, school supplies, and resources they need to start the school year off strong. Governor Katie Hobbs recognized Arizona's top Drug Recognition Experts (DREs) after each conducted more than 100 DRE evaluations in 2025. Their efforts played a key role in Arizona ranking #2 in the nation for total DRE evaluations in 2025.

Of the five DREs nationwide who conducted more than 100 evaluations in 2025, four were from Arizona: Officers Cook and Roselli of Mesa Police Department, and Officers Chavez and Clark of Sierra Vista Police Department.

Congratulations to these outstanding officers, and thank you to Governor Hobbs for recognizing their exceptional performance and commitment to removing impaired drivers from Arizona's roads.

This Fourth of July weekend, Director Torrez attended the San Carlos Apache Police Department's DUI Task Force, the first of its kind hosted by the agency.

A special thank you to Chief Sneezy and the San Carlos Apache Police Department for their commitment to traffic safety and for helping keep the San Carlos Apache Tribe and surrounding communities safe.

This collaborative effort brought together officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Gila County Sheriff's Office, Greenlee County Sheriff's Office, Miami Police Department, White Mountain Apache Police Department, San Carlos Game & Fish, and the San Carlos Apache Police Department. The Arizona Department of Public Safety also provided a DUI processing van from Flagstaff to support the operation. In total, 26 officers participated in the task force.

White Mountain Apache Police Department Captain Tim Chavez also attended this weekends event, highlighting the value of regional partnerships and the potential for similar collaborative efforts in Northern Arizona.

Thank you to all of the officers and partner agencies who spent their holiday weekend working to keep Arizona's roadways safe for everyone traveling this Fourth of July.

During this Holiday, law enforcement agencies throughout Arizona, in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, will be deploying specialized enforcement activities to
reduce crashes, fatalities, and injuries on our roadways.

Activities to combat impaired driving will be carried out statewide by over 50+ Law Enforcement Agencies, including DUI Patrols supported by Drug Recognition Experts (DREs).
