On Monday, at the regular Monthly Meeting of the District No. 3 Fire Department, the members were honored to award the 2026 Assistant Chief Michael Ratner Community Service Memorial Scholarship to Firefighter Matthew Day from the South Plattsburgh Fire Department. Chief Burnell and President vanAuken presented the award on behalf of Mrs. Gayle Ratner and the Department.
Firefighter Day is a 2026 graduate of the Peru Central School District, and participated in The Future Farmers of America and the North Country Loggers Association. He has been a member of SPFD since 2023, and is completing his EMT-B certification currently.
And, as an interesting anecdote, Matthew's grandfather, the late Wally Day, was the person who "recruited" Mike Ratner into the fire service back in 1971.
Firefighter Day will be pursuing a course of study in Fire Protection Technology. We wish him the best in all of his endeavors!

The District No. 3 Fire Department is honored to announce the 2026 ASSISTANT CHIEF MICHAEL L. RATNER COMMUNITY SERVICE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship is possible due to an endowment by Mrs. Gayle Ratner, who chose to remember her husband and our Past Assistant Chief Michael by awarding a graduating senior a $1,000 scholarship to further their education.
