Scammed Once? Don’t Get Scammed Again.

Scammers are contacting people who have already lost money and promising they can recover the stolen funds. They may pose as investigators, attorneys, government agencies or “recovery specialists.”
They may ask for an upfront fee, personal information, banking details or cryptocurrency before they can “release” your money.

STOP. VERIFY BEFORE YOU PAY.

Legitimate law enforcement agencies will not charge you a fee to recover stolen money.
Do not send money or share account information with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
When in doubt, contact your local Sheriff’s Office using a phone number you know is legitimate.

Crime victims/witnesses/family/friends can access offender status information such as parole, facility location, and earliest release date by signing up for VINELink notifications at https://sheriff-assist.org/. VINE allows victims and other individuals to register for release notification against offenders housed in other states as well as those in New York State. VINE allows users to register to receive notification by both phone and e-mail.

VINE’s toll-free number, 1-888-VINE-4-NY (1-888-846-3469) can also be used to register for notification of an inmate’s release from custody.
