American writer Annie Proulx celebrates her 91st birthday today!

📚 Born in Connecticut; Edna Ann "Annie" Proulx began her writing career with fictional stories published in a variety of magazines. She also wrote a series of non-fiction "how to" books before publishing her first volume of short stories, "Heart Songs", in 1988 at age 53.

📚 Her debut novel, "Postcards", was published in 1992, and made Proulx the first woman to win the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. One year later she published "The Shipping News" for which she won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and The Irish Times International Fiction Prize.

📚 Proulx has traveled extensively, and the subject of small; rural towns appears many times throughout her work. Her time spent in Newfoundland was the setting & inspiration for "The Shipping News", and many of her stories are set in Wyoming where she lived for two decades.

📚 Two of her novels, "The Shipping News" and "Barkskins", have been adapted into a film and a tv series, respectively. The most famous adaptation of her work came in 2005 when "Brokeback Mountain", based on a 1997 short story, was released in theaters.

📚 That film, which explored the complex romantic relationship between two American cowboys, was a commercial success and garnered many award nominations and wins. Screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana were widely rewarded for their faithful adaptation of Proulx's story.

Akron, OH born actor Ray Wise celebrates his 79th birthday today!

🎭 Wanting to be a professional actor from a young age, Wise performed in many plays while he attended Kent State University. In 1970 he moved to New York City, and soon received a long-running role on the soap opera “Love of Life”.

🎭 After moving to Hollywood, Wise worked on a variety of TV shows throughout the 80s including “Dallas” and “Knots Landing”. Through the years he has held reoccurring roles on “The Young & the Restless (for which he won a Daytime Emmy)”, “Mad Men”, “How I Met Your Mother”, “Reaper”, and “24” among many other single episode appearances and films.

🎭 Though he has worked on many popular series, his role as Leland Palmer in “Twin Peaks” is his most well-known. Wise’s portrayal of the complex character has been widely praised by fans and critics in both the TV show and prequel film.

🎭 Wise continues to work in film and television today. He was recently nominated for another Daytime Emmy for "The Young and the Restless", and will reunite with fellow Twin Peaks alum Sherilyn Fenn in the psychological thriller "The Good Dark" next year.
