📢Providence City Hall will be closed tomorrow - Friday, June 19, 2026 in observance of Juneteenth.

♻️Waste management services will be delayed due to the holiday. If your regularly scheduled trash recycling pickup day falls on or after a holiday, all pickup days will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week.

In an effort to not only increase the amount of recyclable materials diverted from the landfill but to also save tax payer dollars, we've launched a pilot municipal commercial recycling program. This program is part of our EPA SWIFR grant, leading to less overflow, more space in trash receptacles and creating a more sustainable environment.

This morning, our Department and friends at NEMS toured the Providence Hurricane Barrier!

Guided by our very own DPW Chief Engineer Craig Hochman, we learned about the escalating challenges posed by climate change and intensifying weather patterns, like extreme flooding, impacting Providence. Investments into repairing and maintaining infrastructure like our Hurricane Barrier plays an indispensable role in ensuring Providence’s long-term resiliency and safeguarding the well-being of our community.

The Department of Sustainability is excited to welcome the New England Municipal Sustainability Network (NEMS) Summer Meeting to Providence!

This morning, we took a walking tour with our Providence Planning & Economic Development folks to tour the Providence Riverwalk Project! Looking to return the historic space to a sense of nature and create resiliency, this long-term project will address tidal flooding impacts and storm surges with investments into raising river walks, expanding pedestrian useable space, incorporating a more naturalized river bank and green infrastructure, just to name a few! A great way to kick off two sustainability filled days 🌳🌎

The City of Providence's first-ever Green Revolving Fund was officially signed into law last week by Mayor Smiley and we are excited to report that with this dedicated funding, we have four solar arrays scheduled for installation in 2026 and early 2027, with installation kicking off at Roger Williams Park Maintenance Facility!

Investing in on-site solar systems further reduces emissions and operating costs by supplying clean electricity directly to municipal facilities. Learn more about the City's decarbonization efforts at https://www.providenceri.gov/sustainability/decarbonization/

Since taking office, my administration has made it a priority to invest in initiatives that prepare our City for the realities of climate change. That's why today's signing of the City's first-ever Green Revolving Fund is such an important milestone for Providence.

Through this fund, we will be able to advance key energy improvement projects that not only help the City operate more efficiently but also will save taxpayer dollars.
