Northern Nevada is once again facing the heartbreak and uncertainty brought by a fast-moving wildfire.

The Hawk Fire has burned more than 15,000 acres and remains 0% contained. Nearly 90,000 residents are under evacuation orders or warnings, and six people, including three first responders, have been injured.

Our hearts are with everyone forced to leave home and with every family waiting for answers. We are deeply grateful to the first responders, volunteers, nonprofit partners, and government agencies who are working tirelessly to protect our community.

The 2026 Northern Nevada Wildfire Relief Fund supports local organizations that assist affected residents throughout the long-term recovery process.

As the pandemic caused the crisis to surge, "we really just kind of got the house in order," said Washoe County Commissioner Alexis Hill (D). She said the county implemented more central control over homelessness services, including by taking over some shelters formerly managed by Reno. It also began funneling its COVID-era federal grants into homelessness outreach — and as of 2026 has dedicated more than $35 million to the issue out of the $73 million total expended.

New data shows homelessness across Nevada is increasing, although more slowly in Washoe County than in Clark County. Nearly 3 in 5 of the homeless residents counted in Clark in 2026 were unsheltered.

This is an important message from WCSD:

As a result of the Hawk Fire and at the request of public safety officials, all classes, events, and activities at all WCSD schools – except Gerlach K-12 School – will be canceled on Monday, August 24. The decision to close schools is due to evacuations, impacts on regional public safety resources, and to help keep roads clear for emergency vehicles. Once again, upon the recommendation of public safety officials, all schools with the exception of Gerlach K-12 School are canceled on Monday, August 24.

Governor Lombardo has declared a state of emergency in Washoe County due to the fast-moving fire, unpredictable weather, power outages, and the closure of major roads in our area. Our district continues to provide support wherever possible to public safety agencies as widespread evacuations and other lifesaving efforts have been carried out.

We understand that so many people in our WCSD family—students, families, and staff —are impacted. Over the next few days, we will continue to update our entire district family with information as it becomes available. We are grateful to our firefighters and first responders as they continue to battle this fire, and we thank our district personnel who are assisting with this effort.
