Truckee River Flood Management Authority The Truckee River Flood Management Authority seeks to reduce devastating flood impacts in the Truckee Meadows, NV.

Subscribe to our news and alerts here: https://trfma.org/subscribe/ The Truckee River Flood Management Authority (TRFMA) represents a long-standing collaborative effort among the cities of Reno and Sparks, Washoe County, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and numerous other stakeholders to reduce the devastating impacts of flooding in the Truckee Meadows, Nevada. The agency's mission is to reduce th

e impact of flooding in the Truckee Meadows, restore the Truckee River ecosystem, and improve recreational opportunities by managing the development and implementation of the Truckee River Flood Management Project (Flood Project).

** Flood Project Goals **

The Flood Project is designed to provide a variety of public safety, economic, recreational and environmental benefits to the Truckee Meadows region. Its primary goal is to create a more resilient community by reducing flood damages and deaths resulting from a 1997-type flood event (117-year event). Additionally, the Flood Project incorporates certain recreational and ecosystem restoration features within the footprint of the flood protection infrastructure. TRFMA hopes to achieve these goals by:

• Building levees and floodwalls to protect businesses and homes
• Acquiring and protecting flood-prone lands from development
• Relocating businesses and elevating homes out of the floodplain
• Replacing bridges to increase river channel capacity
• Excavating floodplain terraces to improve floodwater storage
• Restoring ecosystem functions and creating habitat for native species
• Enhancing recreational access and amenities along the river

When you call the driest state in the nation home, it becomes extra important to know just how much water is flowing down your rivers and streams. 🥵

In Nevada and many parts of the West, water is allocated under a water‑rights system. A USGS streamgage provides the official, unbiased measurements needed to make sure each water‑rights holder receives the correct amount of water.

We recently installed a new streamgage in west/central Nevada on the East Walker River. 💧This gage will help the U.S Board of Water Commissioners know how much water is flowing down the East Walker River below the confluence of Rough Creek.
