Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS) is a regional operation providing services to the cities of Reno, Sparks and unincorporated Washoe County residents. WCRAS focuses on animal health and welfare through sheltering, lost/found reunification, field services, regulation enforcement, and proactive outreach programs that support responsible pet guardianship and pet retention. WCRAS impounds an average 9,900 animals annually either brought in by citizens or picked up by field staff. Approximately 75% of the animals that come through the shelter are lost animals. The remaining 25% are bite quarantines, cruelty case animals, deceased animals, etc. WCRAS' regional facility includes 110 dog kennels, 76 cat condos, a six-stall barn for livestock and a four stall coop for fowl. Our facility routinely houses other animals such as reptiles, birds and rabbits and livestock. WCRAS works very diligently to reunite lost pets with their families. For calendar year 2023, we returned a whopping 38% (stray cat and dog) of lost animals to their families! 61% of stray dogs brought into the shelter were returned home! And 7% of the stray cats that were brought into our shelter were returned. Our philosophy is that every animal has a home and we want to help find it, whether it is a lost animal that needs help being reunited with its family or if it has been abandoned and in need of a new place to call home. Our FREE microchip program and diligent efforts by WCRAS staff contribute to our successful reunification of nearly 40% of lost animals. Don't forget to fill out a lost report so we can automatically notify you if a pet matching your description comes into the shelter. Found a pet? WCRAS is the only lost/found shelter in Washoe County so if you lost or found an animal, you found the right place! Complete a found report (Washoeanimals.com) first! Someone may be looking for their lost pet and there may already be a lost animal report on our website. Bring them into our offices or call dispatch to have an officer pick them up. WCRAS offers low-cost vaccination clinics on the first Wednesday of each month and in partnership with SPCA of Northern Nevada we provide free pet food distribution to seniors on the third Tuesday.
